Hawks Win Slugfest at Illinois Springfield 17-8

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team displayed the same hitting prowess and power that they have shown all season in a midweek, 17-8, win over the University of Illinois Springfield at Springfield, Ill. on Tuesday, Mar. 22. QU smashed four home runs in their last game before the Great Lakes Valley Conference season starts on Friday against Truman State University.

The Hawks (13-3) wasted no time pouncing on the UIS (6-8) starter, Adam Gregory (L, 1-2). A walk and catcher's interference put two runners on with one out when Jake Walters connected on a three-run blast to left center in the first inning. Ryan Snyder was hit by a pitch and JP Meyer followed with a two-run bomb to left field to give the Hawks a 5-0 lead.

The top of the QU lineup was up again in the second and Walters came through with an RBI single to right center to score Dominic Miles. R. Snyder doubled down the left field line to score Walters from first.

Brynn Martinez led off the fourth inning with a solo shot to right center. Walters added his fifth RBI on a sacrifice fly to right to score Miles. Meyer knocked out his second home run of the day down the left field line after a R. Snyder single to push the lead to 11-4.

Nolan Snyder got his first start of his career recording a run and a stolen base. Ryan Snyder was 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI. JP Meyer was 2-for-6 with two homers and four RBI. Jake Walters knocked in five RBI going 2-for-5 with a home run. Justin Blechle was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. David Jacob had a two RBI single. Brynn Martinez scored three runs and hit a solo homer. Dominic Miles scored three runs with a walk and a single.

Brandon Ley (W, 2-0) earned the win tossing five relief innings allowing five runs, four earned, and eight hits with six strikeouts. The QU pitching staff recorded 13 strikeouts.

The Hawks head to Kirksville, Mo. for a four-game series at Truman State University on Friday and Saturday (Mar. 25-26) with both days of doubleheaders starting at noon.
