Hawks Soar over Screaming Eagles for Peterson's Third Win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Quincy University baseball team showed some power in a historically pitcher friendly ballpark at USI Baseball Field at the University of Southern Indiana on Saturday, Mar. 19. On a chilly day, Ryan Snyder and David Jacob both provided some pop early and Jake Peterson delivered a solid performance on the mound to upend the Screaming Eagles, 7-4.

In the top of the second inning with one out, Ryan Snyder pulled a ball over the left field fence off of USI (11-6) starter, Luca Barnett, for his, team leading, sixth home run of the season.

Not to be outdone, David Jacob launched a three-run dinger to right field in the top of the third inning to claim the "home run bracelet" for the day and give QU (11-3) a 4-0 lead.

The Screaming Eagles scratched across three runs in the bottom of the third off back-to-back doubles by Ryan Bertram and Trent Gunn.

USI would get to Jake Peterson (W, 3-1) one more time in the fourth inning when Kyle Kempf doubled to right field to score one run. Kyle Niemeier was gunned down at the plate on a solid relay from Snyder to Jake Walters and in to David Hayes for the tag at the plate. The smooth defensive play kept the game tied at 4-4.

Alex Holder (L, 2-2) entered the game for Southern Indiana in the sixth inning. Jake Walters welcomed Holder with a single to left field. After a wild pitch, Ryan Snyder walked. JP grounded out softly to shortstop to advance both runners into scoring position. Chandler Purcell came through with a big two-RBI single through the right side to give the Hawks a 6-4 lead.

The Hawks took advantage of a couple USI miscues in the seventh inning to load the bases for Snyder. The right fielder delivered with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Brynn Martinez for an insurance run.

Teddy Rule (S, 2) came on for the Hawks in the ninth inning. Rule struck out the first hitter and allowed one walk in a scoreless ninth to earn the save and the 7-4 win for QU.

Jake Peterson threw eight innings allowing eight hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Peterson allowed four earned runs.

The Hawks had seven runs on seven hits. Brynn Martinez was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. David Jacob was 1-for-4 with three RBI. Ryan Snyder drove in two runs going 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Chandler Purcell finished 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Quincy and Southern Indiana will face-off again tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 20 at noon in Evansville, Ind. at USI Baseball Field.
