Four Homers Lift Hawks over Bearcats 14-3

QUINCY, Ill. - Brynn Martinez started the bottom of the first off with a home run to right center, and that spelled out the rest of the game for No. 18 Quincy University baseball in a 14-3 win over Northwest Missouri State University on Tuesday, Mar. 15. Martinez was a double away from the cycle as the offense combined for 15 hits including four home runs and two triples.

Martinez' homer was the first of the season for the QU (10-3) sophomore shortstop. Martinez finished 3-for-5 with two RBI, three runs scored, a home run, and a triple. The Southwest Ranches, Fla. native also stole second base in the bottom of the third after a bunt single past the pitcher.

Brandon Ley (W, 1-0) started for the Hawks going five innings and allowing one earned run. The Bearcats (10-9) managed seven hits and one walk off of Ley.

QU broke open the game in the third inning. After Martinez led off and stole second, Dominic Miles singled to tie the game at 2-2. QU would load the bases and JP Meyer singled home a run to keep the bases loaded. Chandler Purcell picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice, and QU would later score on an error by the second baseman.

The wind picked up in the sixth inning. Justin Blechle tripled down the right field line, and Brynn Martinez lined a triple to center that he scored on after an error by the center fielder. Dominic Miles singled on a bunt, and two batters later Jake Walters drilled a home run to left field. After a Ryan Snyder single, JP Meyer guided a ball around the foul pole in left field for a two-run homer and an 11-2 lead.

The game went into a lightning delay after the seventh inning, but it did not cool the QU bats. The wind changed directions and Ryan Snyder took full advantage with a three-run bomb to right center for his fifth of the season.

Shaun Troy, Dalton Overstreet, and Oswald Silvestre combined for the final four innings on the mound. Overstreet allowed one earned run off two hits. Troy allowed two hits in two innings pitched with three strikeouts. Silvestre pitched a hitless ninth.

The Hawks travel to Evansville, Ind. to play the University of Evansville on Saturday, Mar. 19 at noon.
