Pitching and Defense Shored Up in QU 5-1 Win over SVSU

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Quincy University baseball team put together a solid overall game in a 5-1 win over Saginaw Valley State University on Saturday, March 12th. Mark Niebrugge (W, 1-1) allowed one earned run in seven innings of five hit ball. Niebrugge walked two and struck out two. David Jacob and David Hayes both recorded two RBI and had five of Quincy's 10 hits between the two of them.

Carson Eby singled in the second inning for SVSU (5-7). Eby advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Adam Fitzgibbon singled to center with two outs to score Eby and give the Cardinals the lead.

Jake Walters led off the bottom of the second with a single to left field. JP Meyer doubled to left putting two runners in scoring position for David Hayes. Hayes singled to center to score Walters and Meyer giving the Hawks (9-2) a 2-1 lead.

Brynn Martinez singled to center to start the third, and Dominic Miles followed with a single to right to advance runners to the corners. David Jacob hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Martinez.

The Hawks tacked on another run in the bottom half of the sixth when Justin Blechle hit a sacrifice fly to score Meyer to push the QU lead to 4-1.

Miles walked with one out in the seventh and advanced to third on a pair of passed balls. Jacob singled to center field to score Miles.

Cole Crawford came on for Niebrugge in the eighth. Crawford allowed two singles, but the QU defense flipped a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Teddy Rule allowed a walk and a hit in a scoreless ninth to finish up the QU win.

David Hayes was 3-for-4 with two RBI. JP Meyer was 2-for-3 with two runs and a double. David Jacob went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Quincy did not commit an error and turned one double play.

QU will play the University of Indianapolis on Sunday, March 12 in Indianapolis, Ind. First pitch at UIndy will take place at 12 p.m. CT
