Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | Brendan Bittner

Upset Bid Falls Just Short Against #4 Loyola Chicago

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team nearly pulled off an incredible upset at Pepsi Arena, but No. 4 Loyola Chicago – the defending national champion – held off the Hawks in a five-set nailbiter, 25-16, 24-26, 23-25, 25-23, 15-6, in MIVA action on Saturday (Feb. 6) night.

The Hawks (4-8, 0-2 MIVA) also played a second match on Saturday as a split squad traveled to Des Moines, Iowa and was defeated by St. Ambrose, 25-13, 16-25, 25-17, 25-9.

No. 4 Loyola Chicago def. Quincy – 25-16, 24-26, 23-25, 25-23, 15-6

The Hawks' only lead in the first set came after the first point of the game. After that, the Ramblers (6-2, 2-0 MIVA) were in command, turning a 10-8 lead into a 17-9 advantage.

Quincy's fortunes changed drastically in Set 2. The Hawks scored the first three points of the set with senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) on the serve.

The Ramblers battled back and eventually took an 18-14 lead as they eyed a commanding two-set lead. The Hawks fought off the defending champs and eventually tied the set at 20-20 with Gamache again serving.

The Ramblers looked like they would take the set, leading 24-22, but Quincy staved off two set points with a double block by sophomore Jacob Sheets (Arnold, Mo./Seckman) and senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City), followed by a Loyola attacking error.

Following a timeout by the Ramblers, the visitors got a bad set from Peter Hutz and Chappelle and Sheets followed it up with another double block to give the Hawks the set win.

The Ramblers scored the first three points of Set 3 before the Hawks got the next three to even it up. The game was still tied, 14-14, when Quincy went on a 5-0 run with Gamache at the service line. Gamache had a pair of aces in the stretch and junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) and senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) combined on a block.

The Hawks never relinquished their Set 3 lead and took the match lead with a 25-23 win.

The Hawks had several chances to tie the Ramblers late in Set 4, but the visitors continued to convert sideouts. After a kill by Chappelle cut the QU deficit to 23-22, Trevor Novotny put down a kill for Loyola to get to set point. Chappelle's kill pushed to 24-23, but Novotny and Nicholas Olson paired for a block to end the set. The Ramblers finished with 16 blocks in the match.

Quincy started the decisive fifth set on the right foot with three straight points on Chappelle serves, but the Ramblers rolled to the finish with a 15-3 run. The Ramblers hit .471 in the final game.

Chappelle paced the Hawks with 15 kills (.310) and 10 digs for a double-double. Lawson added 10 kills (.031) as QU's other player in double figures. Gamache had nine kills (.222) with two aces and eight digs. Freshman libero Kolbie Knorr (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) led the back row with 13 digs.

Novotny led the Ramblers with 16 kills (.333) while Ricky Gevis added 15 kills (.211). The Ramblers hit .235 as a team and held Quincy to a .153 mark.

St. Ambrose def. Quincy – 25-13, 16-25, 25-17, 25-9

The Hawks' split squad was not able to pick up a victory in nonconference action on Saturday night, falling to St. Ambrose in four sets.

Freshman David Pyles (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt South) led the Hawks with 10 kills (.471) and two blocks.

Sophomore JB Brinkerhoff (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby/Lewis), freshman David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney) and senior Ty Coutts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) had six kills each.

Senior libero Craig Lantz (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) led the back row with four digs.

The Bees out-hit the Hawks, .410 to .176. They were led by 16 kills (.500) from Ryan Mahl.

The Hawks return to the court Tuesday (Feb. 9) for a nonconference doubleheader at Missouri Baptist that starts at 5 p.m.
