Hawks Drop Pair of Thursday Matches

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Thursday (Feb. 25) night in split squad action. The Hawks dropped a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match at No. 9 Ball State, 25-16, 25-18, 25-18, and also fell at Hannibal-LaGrange, 25-15, 25-19, 25-20.
 
The Hawks are now 8-14 overall, 2-6 in MIVA competition.

The Hawks were not able to get their offense in rhythm against the MIVA front-running Cardinals (12-3, 6-0 MIVA), who have won nine straight matches.
 
Quincy hit just .085 in the match as Ball State posted 13 blocks, including 10 from Matt Walsh. BSU also finished with seven service aces.
 
The Hawks took a brief 6-5 lead in Set 1 after a double block by senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) and junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby), but the Cardinals reeled off the next four points, including two aces by Brendan Surane to take the lead for good.
 
Quincy was within two points in Set 2, 20-18, but Ball State scored the last five points to get the win. The Hawks had a 12-11 lead in Set 3, which featured 10 tie scores, but the Cardinals went on a 5-0 run with Walsh on the serve to take command.
 
The Cardinals hit .273 in the match. Surane led the hosts with 12 kills (.476) while Hiago Garchet handed out 26 assists.
 
Senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) led the Hawks with 10 kills (.227) to go with five digs. He now has 998 kills in his career. Kelso and senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City) added five kills apiece. Chappelle led QU with seven digs.

The Hawks's split squad also struggled on the offensive side on Thursday night, hitting .000 in the three-set defeat to the Trojans (4-7), who hit .253 overall.
 
Freshman David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney) led the Hawks with 11 kills (.111). Freshman David Pyles (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt South) added seven kills (.500). Siebum and senior Craig Lantz (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson/Adrian) led the team with five digs each.
 
Freshman Teddy Coleman (Waukegon, Ill.) had three blocks, including two solo stuffs. Freshman Adam Rogan (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) dished out 20 assists.
 
Joao Sales Neto led the Trojans with 11 kills while Milos Stankovic added eight (.583).
 
The Hawks return to the floor with another split squad on Friday (Feb. 26). The Hawks have a MIVA match against IPFW (4-9, 0-5 MIVA) in Fort Wayne, Ind. at 6 p.m. CT. QU's other squad plays at Pepsi Arena at 7 p.m. against Morningside.
