Gamache Smashes 1,000th Kill In Road Win at IPFW

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team used a split squad and split a pair of five-set matches on Friday (Feb. 26) night, picking up a MIVA win at IPFW, 29-27, 25-15, 20-25, 20-25, 15-12. The Hawks also dropped a 3-2 decision to Morningside, 25-21, 25-21, 17-25, 21-25, 15-12.
 
In the match against IPFW, senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) recorded his 1,000th career kill, becoming the sixth player in program history to reach that mark.
 
It was Quincy's first win at IPFW since the 2002 season.

The Hawks (9-15, 3-5 MIVA) and Mastodons were nearly even in most statistical categories with Quincy out-scoring the hosts, 75-73. QU also led in kills, 62-58, while the Mastodons held an 11.5-10.5 lead in blocks.
 
Quincy hit a slightly higher percentage, .279 to .252.
 
The Hawks trailed set 1, 19-16, before scoring five straight on Gamache's serve. QU had four shots at set point, but the Mastodons (4-10, 0-6 MIVA) fought off every opportunity.
 
Quincy fought off a set point at 27-26, but senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City) put down a kill to keep it going. Chappelle and junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) then stopped Andrew Sellan at the net on two straight points to give QU the first set win.
 
Chappelle started Set 2 with a kill before Gamache smashed his second kill of the match and the 1,000th in his career. Chappelle's ace and a Gamache solo block pushed the QU lead to 4-0 to start the set. The Hawks coasted to the win by hitting .400 and holding the Mastodons to a .032 mark.
 
The Hawks looked destined for a sweep after starting the third set on a 14-7 run, capped by five straight service points by senior Ty Coutts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty/Johnson & Wales). The 'Dons outscored the Hawks 18-6 from that point to take the third set.
 
IPFW hit .577 in Set 4 to extend the match to a decisive fifth set. Gamache picked up two straight service points to start. IPFW then took a 5-4 lead with a 3-0 run before Quincy took an 8-7 lead on Kelso's kill.
 
The teams then traded sideouts before Gamache rolled on the serve again, scoring three straight points as Kelso combined for a half-block and two kills to give QU an 11-8 lead. Gamache's 10th kill of the match sealed the win for the Hawks, who are now 43-5 all-time against the Mastodons.
 
Chappelle led four Hawks in double figures with 16 kills (.323), eight digs and four blocks. Kelso added 15 kills (.583) and six blocks. Senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) tacked on 12 kills and eight digs.
 
Junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) handed out 53 assists and totaled six digs. Sophomore Collin Merk (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) led the back row with 10 digs.
 
Tony Price had 18 kills (.325) for the Mastodons, who also got a double-double from Michael Keegan (46 assists, 13 digs).

The Hawks' other squad remained in Quincy on Friday night to take on Morningside at Pepsi Arena.
 
The Mustangs (5-16) won the match, despite the Hawks out-hitting them, .226 to .172. The Hawks were hurt by 23 service errors, though they did put in 11 aces.
 
Morningside won the first two sets by identical 25-21 scores before Quincy rebounded in Set 3 for a 25-17 win. The Hawks held the Mustangs to a .091 hitting percentage in that frame.
 
The Hawks trailed Set 4, 8-6, before going on a 7-2 run to take a 13-10 lead after a kill by freshman David Pyles (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt South). Back-to-back kills by freshman Nyjaee Washington (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial) and senior Ben Thomas (Placerville, Calif./El Dorado) gave the Hawks a 25-21 win.
 
Quincy had an 11-7 lead in Set 5, but the Mustangs finished with an 8-1 run to escape with the win.
 
Freshman David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney) led the Hawks with a QU season-high 21 kills (.326) to go with seven digs and four aces. Washington finished with 14 kills (.222) and Pyles added 11 kills (.786) with no errors on 14 swings.
 
Freshman Adam Rogan (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) contributed a double-double with 46 assists and 13 digs. Senior Craig Lantz (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson/Adrian) had 11 digs.
 
The Hawks return to the court on Thursday (March 3) when they take on Lindenwood in a MIVA contest in St. Charles, Mo.
