No. 9 Hawks Start Opening Day with Fireworks

QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 9 Quincy University baseball team came out of the gates running on Friday night (Feb. 26) in Nashville, Tenn. at Trevecca Nazarene University. QU showed little rust from the offseason posting five runs in the first three innings en route to a 12-1 opening day victory. The Hawks were rolling on all cylinders with 13 hits on offense and 14 strikeouts for the pitching staff.

Jake Peterson (W, 1-0) tossed a gem for the Hawks (1-0) in the first game of the season. Peterson struck out 10 hitters over seven innings pitched. The southpaw scattered five hits and allowed one unearned run.

Ryan Snyder provided the big bat for the QU offense. Snyder started the scoring in the first with a two-run double to left field. Snyder would finish 2-for-3 with two doubles and five RBI.

Brynn Martinez and Dominic Miles tallied back-to-back RBI singles in the second inning to give QU a 4-0 lead. Martinez was a spark at the top of the lineup for QU going 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Trevecca Nazarene (4-2) picked up their first hit in the third inning on a single by Carter Wiseman. Wiseman would later score on an error on Peterson during a first-and-third play. Peterson ended the threat with a strikeout swinging.

The Hawks' bats were back at it in the seventh inning. David Jacob singled to bring home Justin Blechle, and an error by the right fielder brought Brynn Martinez racing across the plate safely. Jacob would later score on a Snyder double. Jacob finished 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.

The Hawks tallied on four more in the ninth capped by a two-RBI single off the bat of transfer backstop, David Hayes. Hayes was 2-for-5 with two RBI on the night.

Karl Hirsch and Brock Best combined for four strikeouts in the eight and ninth inning to shut the door on the Trojans.

Justin Blechle was 2-for-3 with three runs for QU. Jake Walters knocked a triple to right center and finished with three runs scored. Dominic Miles chipped in a run, a hit, and an RBI.

The Hawks continue their stay in Nashville, Tenn. with a game tomorrow (Feb. 27) at noon CDT against Wayne State University.
