Hawks Battle From Two Sets Behind, Fall Short In Five

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team came back from a two-set deficit, but came up just short in a back-and-forth fifth set as McKendree escaped with a 25-20, 25-20, 16-25, 26-28, 15-13 win over the Hawks in MIVA action Friday (Feb. 19) night at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks (7-11, 1-5 MIVA) trailed the entire first set and only briefly in the early portions of set two as they fell behind the Bearcats.

Quincy's fortunes changed in the third. Senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City) got the Hawks going with a quick 2-0 service run, including his own kill that earned the first point of the set.

QU continued to trade two points for every one of McKendree's to extend their lead to 7-4 after a service error by the visitor. Back-to-back kills by senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) and senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) pushed QU's lead to 12-7.

Leading 17-12, the Hawks went on a 7-1 run with four straight points coming off the serve of senior Ben Thomas (Placerville, Calif./El Dorado). Chappelle's kill at set point gave the Hawks the win.

The Hawks seemed to have full command of Set 4 after racing out to a 14-7 lead. The frame started with a kill by junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) and then consecutive aces by Chappelle.

The Bearcats (3-4, 3-3 MIVA) got back into the game with their block, getting back-to-back stops to cut QU's lead to 18-16 before tying the match with a Maalik Walker block, 20-20. McKendree briefly took the lead before three straight points – two on kills by junior setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) – gave the hosts a 23-21 lead.

McKendree battled back to tie it at 23-23 before fighting off three set points. Sophomore Jacob Sheets (Arnold, Mo./Seckman) picked up a kill to get the serve back for QU and the Hawks claimed the set on an attack error by Jared Wilcox.

Set 5 was wild, featuring 13 tie scores and five lead changes. Neither team led by more than two until the Bearcats put down the final point. The Hawks led 13-12 after Walker's hitting error, but the Bearcats scored the next three points to seal the win.

Chappelle totaled five of his 16 kills in the fifth set as he led the Hawks offensively. The senior had a career night setting a career high in kills and digs (13) for his second double-double of the season. He hit .519 in the match.

Kelso was the only other QU player in double figures, putting down 12 kills (.450) and adding five blocks. Lawson and Gamache added nine kills apiece. Fanfulik helped Quincy hit .308 in the match, dishing out 44 assists to go with eight kills.

Wilcox paced the Bearcats with 19 kills (.359), while setter Pasquale Fiduccia had 50 assists and helped the visitors hit .389 overall.

The Hawks return to the court on Saturday (Feb. 20) at 7 p.m. when they take on Lindenwood (2-8, 0-4 MIVA) at Pepsi Arena.
