Balanced Attack Leads Hawks To MIVA Sweep of Lions

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team bounced back from a tough five-set defeat to McKendree on Friday with a comprehensive three-set sweep over Lindenwood, 25-18, 25-20, 25-22, in MIVA action on Saturday (Feb. 20) night at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks (8-11, 2-5 MIVA) dominated the match from the start, taking advantage of quality service opportunities. Senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) reeled off six straight service points in the first set to give the Hawks a 16-11 lead.

QU never led by less than four points after that in the set and senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) finished the frame with a pair of kills. The Hawks hit .444 in the first set.

The Hawks' defense set the tone in Set 2 as the Hawks held the Lions to a minus-.091 hitting percentage. QU picked up its block in the second set with three.

Set 2 was a game of runs as senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City) got the Hawks going with five straight service points. Juniors Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) and Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) combined on a pair of blocks in that stretch. The Lions (2-9, 0-5 MIVA) answered with the next three points before Quincy came back with three straight.

The Lions then went on a 4-0 run to cut Quincy's lead back to 9-8. A 7-3 Quincy run helped the Hawks take command. Included in that burst were consecutive aces by senior Ty Coutts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty/Johnson & Wales) that pushed QU's lead to 16-11. An attacking error by the Lions eventually gave Quincy the set win.

Set 3 was the tightest of the bunch, but Quincy got sideouts on 90 percent (20-for-22) of Lindenwood's serves as the Hawks edged the Lions. Gamache's third ace ended the match.

The Hawks were balanced offensively with five players finishing with at least five kills. Lawson led the way with eight kills (.158). Chappelle tacked on six kills (.214) while Fanfulik (.714), Gamache (.375) and Kelso (.333) had five apiece. Fanfulik also led the Hawks with 23 assists and five digs.

Jake Duckworth paced the Lions with 10 kills (.174). Ryan Voderer had a match-high seven digs.

The Hawks cap their weekend long homestand on Sunday (Feb. 21) at 4 p.m. when they take on St. Ambrose in nonconference action at Pepsi Arena.
