QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday (Feb. 12) night. The Hawks defeated Hannibal-LaGrange in five sets, 25-18, 25-19, 20-25, 22-25, 15-9, in nonconference action at Pepsi Arena. In Phoenix, Ariz., the Hawks also played a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match, falling to Grand Canyon, 25-17, 26-24, 20-25, 25-21.

The Hawks are now 6-10 on the season and 0-4 in MIVA play.

Quincy def. Hannibal-LaGrange – 25-18, 25-19, 20-25, 22-25, 15-9

The Hawks stormed out of the gate in the first two sets against the Trojans and looked destined to take the match in a sweep, but the visitors took the next two sets to force a decisive fifth game.

QU hit .457 in the first two sets of the match as freshman setter Adam Rogan (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) got into an early rhythm. Five players had multiple kills in the first set. QU finished with a season-best .365 hitting percentage.

Set 2 belonged to sophomore Anthony Winter (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/St. Edward), who put down eight kills in eight attacks in the frame. He also had a service ace.

The Trojans (3-6) responded well in the next two sets, holding Quincy to a .138 hitting percentage in the third.

In the fifth set, the Trojans scored the first point, but Quincy got the next three points – the last coming on a kill by freshman Teddy Coleman (Waukegan, Ill.). The Trojans never got out of that hole as Quincy went up 7-3 before an HLGU timeout. A service ace by freshman NyJaee Washington (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial) closed the match. He also ended the first set with an ace.

The Hawks had their blocking game going, totaling 12 in the match while the Trojans managed only three. Freshman David Pyles (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt South) finished with eight blocks (one solo) and nine kills (.500).

Winter paced the Hawks with 19 kills (.471) and six blocks (two solo) while sophomore JB Brinkerhoff (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby/Lewis) added 16 kills (.414).  Rogan handed out 54 assists. Senior Craig Lantz (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson/Adrian) led the back row with seven digs.

Joao Sales Neto led the Trojans with 15 kills (.143) while Dakota Meador led all players with 10 digs.

Grand Canyon def. Quincy – 25-17, 26-24, 20-25, 25-21

The Hawks dropped their road MIVA match in Phoenix in four sets as the Lopes (9-3, 2-1 MIVA) hit .379 on the night to defeat Quincy. The loss came despite senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) matching a career high with 18 kills.

Quincy led the first set, 9-5, in the early going, but a 13-3 run by Grand Canyon pushed the home team to a 25-17 win in the opening stanza.

QU led by as many as five points in Set 2 as late as 19-14, but GCU continued to battle and took a 22-21 lead after an 8-2 run. QU fought off a set point at 24-23 before the Lopes got the next two to seal the Set 2 win.

The Hawks bounced back nicely in the third set by hitting .471. Gamache was especially dynamic in the third set with six kills and no errors on 10 swings.

Quincy opened the third on a 9-1 run and carried that advantage through the end. Senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City) picked up two aces in a 6-0 run to start the set. Gamache's kill sent the match to a fourth set.

The Hawks scored five of the first seven points in Set 4, but the Lopes were able to take control of the game with a 4-0 run that snapped a 17-17 tie.

Junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) had 14 kills (.360) and Chappelle added 13 kills (.308) and a team-high nine digs as the third QU player in double figures. Junior setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) helped Quincy hit .283 in the match, picking up 45 assists.

Will Schwob and Luke Turner paced the Lopes with 14 kills apiece. The Hawks led the hosts in kills, 60-49, but the Hawks finished with 17 service errors and the Lopes had just seven. GCU had just 10 hitting errors in the match.

The Hawks return to the court on Saturday (Feb. 13) to take on Grand Canyon to complete the two-match series in Phoenix. First serve is set for 7 p.m. CT.
