Hawks Earn First MIVA Win, Take Down Host GCU in Four Sets

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team dropped the first set, but the Hawks rallied to defeat MIVA foe Grand Canyon in four games, 20-25, 25-22, 25-13, 25-17, in Phoenix, Ariz. on Saturday (Feb. 13) night.
 
The Hawks (7-10, 1-4 MIVA) picked up their first MIVA win of the season and split their weekend in the desert against the Lopes (9-4, 2-2 MIVA) after dropping a four-set match on Friday night.
 
After dropping Set 1, the Hawks were on the verge of falling behind two sets when they trailed in the second, 22-20. Quincy then scored the next five points to take the set. Senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) got the rally started with a kill before senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) and sophomore Jacob Sheets (Arnold, Mo./Seckman) combined on a block to tie the set.
 
With Lawson serving , the Hawks got a kill from senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City), a kill by Sheets and a kill by Gamache to seal the win. QU hit .500 in Set 2.
 
The Hawks continued their roll in Set 3 and picked up their defensive effort in the meantime. Quincy held the Lopes to a .000 hitting percentage, while the Hawks hit .476 with just one hitting error.
 
Gamache got the Hawks going with a 4-0 service run, including a pair of aces. The Hawks then closed the set on a 10-1 run, going six straight with senior Ben Thomas (Placerville, Calif./El Dorado) on the serve to close the set.
 
In Set 4, the Hawks again held the Lopes to a .057 hitting percentage in Set 4 to clinch the win. The game was tied 5-5 before QU scored three straight points. Chappelle put down a kill then combined with Sheets on a double block. Sheets' kill capped the run.
 
The Hawks led 10-8 before going on an 8-2 run to take full command of the fourth set. Kills by Gamache and junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) closed the match.
 
The Hawks hit .364 in the match while holding the Lopes to a .184 mark. QU had 57 kills to just 13 attacking errors. Junior setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) had a main role in that, dishing out 43 assists while adding four kills and six digs.
 
Lawson led the Hawks with 14 kills (.448) against just one error in 29 swings. He also had a team-high 12 digs and two aces. Gamache added 13 kills (.357), seven digs and four aces. Chappelle was the third QU player in double figures with 10 kills (.208), six digs and five blocks. Sheets had a team-high six blocks to go with four kills (.571).
 
Cody Williams paced the Lopes with 11 kills (.391) while Sky Engleman had a match-high 14 digs.
 
The Hawks return to the floor on Friday (Feb. 19) at Pepsi Arena where they take on McKendree in MIVA action. First serve goes up at 7 p.m.
