Hot Shooting Continues As Hawks Down Peacocks, 86-78

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team continued its hot-shooting start to the season by dispatching host Upper Iowa, 86-78, on Tuesday (Nov. 15) in Fayette.

The Hawks shot 55 percent (33-for-60) from the floor and 50 percent (11-for-22) from 3-point range on their way to scoring 40 points in each half. They have now shot over 50 percent from the field in each of their first three games.

Quincy is now 2-1 on the season, playing three in-region games against Grand Valley State, Ferris State and UIU. Last year, the Hawks were 0-3 against those opponents to start the season and it proved costly when it came time to hand out NCAA postseason bids.

On Tuesday, the Hawks used a 15-0 run over a four-plus minute span in the first half to take a 24-11 lead. Senior guard Grant Meyer (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) capped the run with a layup and also hit a 3-pointer during that spurt. He scored a team-high 17 points and shot 4-for-6 from 3-point range.

The first-half lead grew to as many as 20 points after a 3-pointer by senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) with 2:53 to go before halftime.

The Peacocks (1-2) climbed back into the game in the second half as the Hawks struggled on the defensive side of the ball. Upper Iowa shot 56 percent (23-for-41) from the field and scored 54 points in the final 20 minutes, trimming the lead to as little as six points on multiple occasions.

The last of those two-possession leads was thwarted on back-to-back threes by senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) and Meyer that stretched the lead to 68-56 with 8:35 to play.

The Peacocks cut the lead to seven points once more, but Senor hit a 3-pointer after a missed triple by UIU's Jimmy Roth. Sophomore wing Marcus Hinton (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central/Lindenwood) knocked down a three that pushed the lead to 11 with 2:38 remaining.

Six players scored in double figures for the Hawks. Senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis.) chipped in a double-double with 15 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Senor and senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) had 12 points apiece. Washington scored 11 and Hinton had 10 off the bench. Senior center Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) shot 4-for-5 from the field and scored nine points.

The Hawks held a 39-34 edge on the glass and held the Peacocks to 25.8 percent (8-for-31) shooting in the first half.

The Hawks' next game will be their home opener on Saturday, Nov. 19. They will play host to Hannibal-LaGrange at Pepsi Arena at 7:30 p.m.
