Hawks Dismantle Hannibal-LaGrange in Home Opener

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team used a 38-12 run over a span of nearly 15 minutes from the first half to the second half on its way to toppling Hannibal-LaGrange, 82-54, in the Hawks' home opener on Saturday (Nov. 19) night at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks (3-1) limited the Trojans (4-1) to 32 percent (8-for-25) shooting and held them to just 24 points in the second half.

The teams were tied, 16-16, with 12:45 left in the first half before a 7-0 run gave the Hawks a bit of separation. Quincy used its inside-out game well, especially in the first half when senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis.) scored six points, collected seven boards and dished out three assists. He registered his second straight double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Hawks led 23-21 with just under nine minutes left in the first half when they started their game-deciding run. They led at halftime, 44-30, with senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) scoring the last four points of the half.

The lead ballooned to 28 points, 61-33, with 14:17 to play after QU started the second half on a 17-3 burst, capped by a jumper by senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West). The Hawks held the Trojans scoreless for the first 4:50 of the second half.

Washington led the Hawks with 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting. The Hawks shot 57.4 percent (35-for-61) from the field. McGaughey chipped in 13 points and seven boards. Senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) was the offensive sparkplug dishing out 11 assists – the second time this season he has hit double figures in that category. He also scored eight points.

Quincy owned a 41-25 advantage on the glass and had a 29-5 edge in fast-break points.

De'Shawn Terrell paced the Trojans with 17 points and Demetrius Early added 13.

The Hawks will return to the floor on Monday (Nov. 21) at Pepsi Arena when they take on Robert Morris-Springfield. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
