Hawks Stifle Lakers, Hold On For 79-71 Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team opened the 2016-17 season with a 79-71 win over Grand Valley State on Friday (Nov. 11) night at the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge in St. Louis, Mo.

The Hawks (1-0) held the Lakers to just 42 percent (29-for-69) shooting from the floor.

Quincy trailed for much of the first half before closing the half on a 23-2 run over the final 7:47 that turned a 28-18 deficit into a 41-30 halftime lead. The Lakers (0-1) missed their final 10 shots of the first half.

The Hawks stayed hot in the second half, hitting their first four field goals, including a 3-pointer by senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) and a couple of layups by senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast).

Quincy used a 9-0 run to stretch its lead from 13 to 22, 74-52, with 7:25 to play. Senor's layup to cap the run would be the Hawks' final field goal of the game as they missed their last eight shots.

The Lakers finished the game on a 19-5 run, but the Hawks hit three of their last four free throws to seal the victory.

McGaughey led four double-figure scorers with 16 points and 13 rebounds. He also dished out three assists and blocked two shots.

Senor and senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis./Kirkwood CC) had 14 points apiece and senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) chipped in 13 points.

The Hawks shot 52 percent (26-for-50) from the floor, including a 7-for-15 (46.7 percent) from 3-point range. All eight players who saw time made at least one field goal.

Senior center Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) scored nine points on 4-of-5 shooting and senior guard Grant Meyer (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) scored five points. Both saw their first regular season action following significant knee injuries. Meyer sat out all of last season and Hoover played in just the first three games.

Trevin Alexander paced the Lakers with 14 points and nine rebounds. The Hawks led on the boards, 40-37, but committed 20 turnovers.

The Hawks will return to the floor on Saturday (Nov. 12) at 5 p.m. when they take on Ferris State (1-0) to conclude the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge. The Bulldogs beat Missouri-St. Louis on Friday.
