Ferris State Pulls Away To Hand Hawks First Loss

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team dropped a 97-81 decision to Ferris State in the finale of the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge, hosted by Missouri-St. Louis, on Saturday (Nov. 12).

Senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) led the Hawks with 22 points on 10-for-13 shooting. Senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) had a double-double with 15 points and 13 assists. His assist total is the highest in the program since at least the 2006-07 season.

The Hawks (1-1) used an early 7-0 run, started with five points by Senor and capped by McGaughey's basket, to take an 18-14 lead with 13:41 to play in the first half.

The Bulldogs (2-0), who advanced to the Midwest Regional final last season, would battle back and take a 48-37 lead into the intermission.

The Hawks chipped into that deficit in the second half and took a 55-54 lead with 15:29 remaining after McGaughey's jumper. The teams traded the lead a couple times before senior center Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) gave QU a 64-60 edge by converting a three-point play.

Hoover answered a Drew Cushingberry three-point play with his own jumper to keep the Hawks on top, 66-63, but the Bulldogs took the lead for good on back-to-back baskets by Peter Firlik.

The lead would eventually swell to 20 points, 88-68, on a 17-0 burst by the Bulldogs, who held the Hawks without a field goal for nearly eight minutes.

Senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis.) chipped in 15 points and sophomore wing Marcus Hinton (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central/Lindenwood) added 10 as the fourth QU player in double figures.

The Hawks shot 51.7 percent (31-for-60) from the floor, but Ferris State connected at a 56.4 percent (31-for-55) rate. The Bulldogs also went 29-for-33 (87.9 percent) at the free throw line.

The Hawks will return to the floor on Tuesday (Nov. 15) for their third straight in-region game as they travel to Upper Iowa. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Fayetteville.
