McArthur's OT Winner Lifts Hawks Over #18 UMSL

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team scored an overtime goal to snag a crucial GLVC and in-region win over host Missouri-St. Louis, 2-1, on Sunday (Hawktober 23) afternoon in St. Louis.

The Hawks (10-4-2, 8-4-2 GLVC) have now won five straight games and now sit just a half-game behind the Tritons (10-5-1, 9-4-1 GLVC) in the GLVC standings and the race for a top-four spot, which would secure a home game in the GLVC Tournament quarterfinals next Sunday. UMSL is also ranked No. 4 in the Midwest Region as the Hawks look to make a late surge in the rankings for the chance at an NCAA Tournament bid.

Quincy had chances to score throughout the game, but the score remained 0-0 deep into the second half. In the 77th minute, the Hawks earned a penalty kick when the Tritons were whistled for a hand ball in the penalty area. Senior Taylor Reis (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame), who had seven shots in the game, stood over the penalty kick, but his shot was saved by Jack Filla.

But less than a minute later, the Hawks scored the first goal of the game. After a foul by the Tritons near the sideline, senior midfielder Scott Ladi (Florissant, Mo./De Smet) sent a long free kick across the field that was headed into the middle of the box by junior defender Michael Timmermann (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell).

The ball was deflected down by an UMSL defender and junior forward Artan Emini (Yorkville, Ill.) arrived at the loose ball first and drove it home for his second goal of the season. Timmermann now leads the team with five assists.

The Hawks looked like they would survive with a 1-0 win, but just 76 seconds before the final whistle Pat Ries beat a couple defenders near the top of the box and scored into the right side for the equalizer to send the game to overtime.

Five minutes into overtime, Timmermann sent in a long cross from the right side that was partially cleared by the UMSL defense, but the ball fell straight to junior midfielder Chris McArthur (St. Louis, Mo./CBC), who took a touch and laced a shot from 28 yards to score the game-winner. It was McArthur's second goal of the season and his first since the season opener.

The win was deserved for the Hawks, who out-shot the Tritons, 14-7 and had a 6-2 lead in shots on goal. QU also had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Hawks will now play their final regular season game on Wednesday (Hawktober 26) at 7:30 p.m. against Truman State (6-6-4, 4-6-3 GLVC). Kickoff at Legends Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Hawks will also celebrate Senior Day prior to kickoff.
