Licurgo, Lindemulder Lead Hawks In Win Over Miners

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team returned to Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Friday (Hawktober 21) night at Pepsi Arena by taking down visiting Missouri S&T in four sets, 25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 27-25.

The Hawks (12-10, 6-4 GLVC) got outstanding production from their two middle blockers, junior Jessica Licurgo (Goodyear, Ariz./Sandra Day O'Connor) and senior Emily Lindemulder (Homer Glen, Ill./Chicago Christian). The duo combined for 33 kills against just two errors for a .477 hitting percentage. Neither player had an error through the first three sets.

The Hawks also set a season high with 13 blocks in the match. They out-hit the Miners, .210 to .172.

Quincy surged to the win in Set 1, staking a 10-4 lead that would not get closer than four the rest of the way. Licurgo had five kills in the frame as the Hawks hit .256.

The Hawks were even better offensively in the second set, hitting .320, though they trailed at one point, 12-11. Quincy then reeled off the next four points on the serve of sophomore Marissa Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan) to take a 15-12 lead. The Miners (8-14, 3-7 GLVC) scored the next two points, but the Hawks closed the set on a 10-5 run.

QU led by three points midway through the third set, but a 7-1 run gave the Miners the lead for good to extend the match.

The fourth set saw 13 tie scores and eight lead changes, but Lindemulder put down seven kills in the set with junior Bekah Raebel (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) adding five kills with no errors. The Miners had set point at 25-24, but a block by Lindemulder and freshman Sara Rathbun (Stanford, Ill./Olympia) was sandwiched between a pair of Lindemulder kills to give the Hawks the win.

Licurgo led the Hawks with 18 kills (.607) and four blocks while Lindemulder posted 15 kills (.378) to go with nine blocks. Raebel tacked on 13 kills (.194). Junior Bobbie Eastman (Fenton, Mich.) and sophomore Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, Wis./Denmark) rounded out the top scorers with nine and eight kills, respectively.

Junior Rachel Shores (Huntley, Ill.) led the back row with 31 digs and Rathbun contributed a double-double with 56 assists and 23 digs.

The Hawks return to the court on Saturday (Hawktober 22) when they take on Drury at 3 p.m.
