Hawks Rally For Four-Set Win Over Drury

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team earned a hard-fought, four-set win over visiting Drury, 25-21, 14-25, 26-24, 25-23, on Saturday (Hawktober 22) afternoon at Pepsi Arena to give the Hawks a weekend GLVC sweep.

With the win, the Hawks (13-10, 7-4 GLVC) pulled into a four-way tie with the Panthers (16-8, 7-4 GLVC), Truman State and Missouri-St. Louis for second place in the GLVC West.

The Hawks started the match at a blistering offensive pace, hitting .444 in the opening frame to take the early 1-0 lead. Quincy's middles, junior Jessica Licurgo (Goodyear, Ariz./Sandra Day O'Connor) and senior Emily Lindemulder (Homer Glen, Ill./Chicago Christian), combined to go 8-for-11 with no errors.

The Panthers bounced back to win the second set by holding the Hawks to a .065 hitting percentage.

The third set saw 13 tie scores and three lead changes as the teams played close throughout. The Hawks built a 23-20 lead before Drury recorded three straight kills to tie the frame at 23-23. Sophomore Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, Wis./Denmark) followed with a clutch kill, but Carlie Fangman answered for the Panthers. Then came an error by DU before junior Rachel Shores (Huntley, Ill.) finished the set with an ace at 26-24.

Quincy battled from behind in the fourth set when trailing 21-17. Licurgo's ace trimmed the deficit down to two points until Lindemulder and junior Bobbie Eastman (Fenton, Mich.) combined for three straight double blocks to give the Hawks a 22-21 lead. Another error pushed it to 23-21.

The teams then traded kills before Lindemulder put the match away with a powerful spike as a boisterous QU crowd roared.

Lindemulder finished with 11 kills (.450) and four blocks. Eastman added 10 kills (.348) and five blocks, while McMonagle tacked on 10 kills (.154). Shores led the back row with 21 kills to go with two aces. Senior Jessica Wicinski (Geneva, Ill.) also had 11 digs.

The Hawks out-hit the Panthers, .224 to .221, and had a 7-3 edge in blocks.

The Hawks start their final home weekend on Friday (Hawktober 28) at 7 p.m. when they take on Saint Joseph's.
