Hawks Rally From Two Sets Down To Beat Pumas

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team stormed back from two sets down and used extra points in the fifth set to finally dispatch of Saint Joseph's, 19-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20, 16-14, on Friday (Hawktober 28) night at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks (14-10, 8-4 GLVC) have won three straight matches and are now in a two-way tie for second place in the GLVC West with Truman State.

On Friday, the teams were statistically very even. The Hawks out-hit the Pumas, .232 to .230, and had more kills, 64-63. Quincy made the biggest difference at the net, holding a 14-8 edge in blocks. QU set a season high in that category.

After dropping the first two sets to the Pumas (6-18, 2-10 GLVC), the teams were tied in Set 3, 13-13, before picking up the next five points on the serve of sophomore Marissa Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan). QU never relinquished that lead.

The Hawks never trailed in the fourth set as they hit .278 and held the Pumas to a .167 mark.

Quincy trailed Set 5, 9-8, but scored the next three points, getting a double block by juniors Jessica Licurgo (Goodyear, Ariz./Sandra Day O'Connor) and Bobbie Eastman (Fenton, Mich.) and back-to-back kills from Eastman and senior Emily Lindemulder (Homer Glen, Ill./Chicago Christian).

The teams then exchanged sideouts for several rotations. QU took a 14-13 lead on Lindemulder's kill, but SJC staved off match point with a kill by Shawntel James. Junior Bekah Raebel (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) then put down a kill and Licurgo finished the match with a solo block, sending the crowd into a roar.

The Hawks had a balanced attack as four players finished in double figures in kills, led by 15 from Raebel. Eastman and Lindemulder added 14 kills and McMonagle produced a double-double with 13 kills and 16 digs. Licurgo had a career-high 12 blocks and six digs. Freshman Sara Rathbun (Stanford, Ill./Olympia) dished out 34 assists and junior Rachel Shores (Huntley, Ill.) led the defense with 26 digs.

The Hawks return to the floor on Saturday (Hawktober 29) at 3 p.m. when they take on Indianapolis in the final match at Pepsi Arena this season. The Hawks will celebrate Senior Day prior to first serve.
