QU Falls By A Goal Against Maryville

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer team had a majority of the possession and out-shot Maryville, 16-7, but the Saints' first half goal held up as the visitors turned back the Hawks, 1-0, at Legends Stadium on Friday (Hawktober 21) night.

The Hawks (6-7-2, 6-6-1 GLVC) had decent chances throughout the game, but could not apply the finishing touch in the penalty area as Maryville keeper Alison Riddle made 10 saves to preserve the shutout.

Quincy took four corner kicks the game's first 20-plus minutes, the last of which resulted in a well-struck header by freshman midfielder Mo Rooney (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word), but Riddle was on the spot for the save. That was one of six shots on goal for the Hawks in the first half.

The Saints (6-9, 5-8 GLVC) got on the board in the 37th minute against the run of play as Erin Ginsburg headed down a ball for Casey Gonzales, who was able to knock the ball in to give the Saints the one-goal lead.

Maryville would make the lead stand even as Quincy out-shot the Saints, 7-4, in the second half.

Sophomore forward Cassidy Foley (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame) led the Hawks with five total shots. Junior goalkeeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) made two saves. QU led in corner kicks, 8-5.

The Hawks will play the penultimate game of the regular season on Sunday (Hawktober 23) when they travel to Missouri-St. Louis. Kickoff is set for noon.
