Hawks Hold Off Lewis For Fourth Straight Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer team won its fourth straight game on Friday (Hawktober 14) night, holding off host Lewis, 2-1, in Romeoville, Ill.

The Hawks (6-5-2, 6-4-1 GLVC) earned a crucial win against the Flyers (6-7-1, 4-6-1 GLVC), who entered just a game behind QU in the conference standings.

Quincy outshot Lewis, 7-5, in the first half and freshman midfielder Mo Rooney (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) had a shot clang off the post in the 22nd minute. Lewis' Mackenzie Fuller also struck the post in the 35th minute, so the game remained scoreless until just before halftime.

In the 44th minute, junior defender Allison Birke (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic/SLU) picked out reserve midfielder Allison Diekmann (Imperial, Mo./Seckman) with a pass and the sophomore deposited her second goal of the season. Birke picked up her first assist.

Just two minutes after halftime, junior wing Natalie Quisenberry (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) scored on a free kick from 20 yards out to stretch the Hawks' lead to 2-0.

Almost two minutes later, the Flyers cut the lead in half as Kailey Parnello found the back of the net off a cross from Jessica Chavez.

The Hawks had a couple shots in the next 20 minutes while limiting the Flyers' opportunities until the 69th minute when QU committed a foul in the box. Fuller stepped up to the spot, but junior goalkeeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) came up with a lead-preserving save.

Swanson made another save a minute later on a header by Karlie Cummins off a corner kick to keep Quincy's lead at 2-1.

The teams were even in shots, 6-6, in the second half as the Hawks were able to keep the Flyers off the board the rest of the way.

Swanson made five saves for the Hawks while Quisenberry led the team with six shots. Both teams finished with one corner kick.

The Hawks will look for their fifth straight win on Sunday (Hawktober 16) at 2:30 p.m. when they take on UW-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis.
