Hawks Win Five Events Against No. 10 Truman

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's swimming team officially started its 2016-17 season against reigning Great Lakes Valley Conference champion and 10^th-ranked Truman State on Friday (Hawktober 14) night at the Health & Fitness Center pool.

The Bulldogs came away with a 120-78 win while the Hawks won five of the 11 events at the dual meet.

The Hawks got their first win of the night with a 1-2 finish in the 1000 freestyle as sophomore Brittany Walenczyk (Waukesha, Wis./West) clocked in with a time of 11:05.43, nearly 10 seconds ahead of freshman teammate Sydney Zimdars (Whitewater, Wis.).

Freshman Eboni McCray (Avondale, Ariz./Agua Fria) earned a win in the 100 butterfly, touching the wall in just a hair over a minute at 1:00.31. The Hawks also had the top two finishes in the 100 backstroke with sophomore McKenna Brown (Minot, N.D./Minot-Magic City) clocking in at 1:02.44, followed by freshman Athena Leex (Kopavofur, Iceland) at 1:03.82.

Zimdars was the top finisher in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:30.67 and freshman Jamie Mans (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) was the winner in the 100 breaststroke, clocking in at 1:10.59.

Mans was also second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:16.44. Senior Briana Flores (Lakeland, Fla./Tenoroc/Indian River State) was third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 58.09 seconds.

The team of Flores, Mans, McCray and freshman Julianna Basler (Maryland Hts., Mo./Pattonville) was second in the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:13.55.

QU had two teams in the 200 freestyle relay. The first squad consisted of Walenczyk, Leex, Basler and Brown touched the pad in 1:46.12 to finish second. McCray, sophomore Katie Cazes (Port Allen, La./St. Joseph's Academy), Zimdars and Flores finished third in 1:47.56.

The Hawks will travel to the University of Northern Iowa next Friday (Hawktober 21) for a meet with the Panthers and Sioux Falls.
