Hawks Fall In Four Sets To #4 Long Beach State

QUINCY, Ill. – If this weekend's performances were any indication, the Quincy University men's volleyball team is in for one of their best seasons in recent memory.

The Hawks finished the weekend without a win, but played three tough opponents tightly-contested matches, taking No. 9 UCSB and California Baptist to five sets on Friday (Jan. 8) before falling to No. 4 Long Beach State in four sets, 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22) on Saturday (Jan. 9).

The Hawks (0-3) dropped the first set as the 49ers (3-0) hit .353 and picked up sideouts on 88 percent of their opportunities to keep Quincy from going on a service run.

In Set 2, the Hawks trailed, 11-9, before going on a 5-0 run with senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City) on the serve. Junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) did much of the damage, sandwiching a kill inside a pair of blocks during the run.

The 49ers managed to tie the score at 17-17, but Quincy got a kill from sophomore Jacob Sheets (Arnold, Mo./Seckman) and an ace from junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) to take a two-point lead. The teams then traded sideouts before Quincy reeled off three straight points with senior Ben Thomas (Placerville, Calif./El Dorado) serving. The 49ers cut the deficit down to one, 24-23, but a service error gave the Hawks the set win.

Both teams played well offensively in Set 3 as Quincy hit .333 with just three errors, but the 49ers were even more efficient, hitting at a .625 rate (17 kills, two errors) to take the frame, 25-19.

In Set 4, the Hawks came back from a 19-14 deficit to tie it at 20-20. Chappelle had two kills and combined with Sheets for a block during the run. Long Beach gained the momentum back by scoring the next three points before going on to win, 25-22.

Four players – senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West), freshman David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney), Kelso and Chappelle – finished with eight kills apiece.

The Hawks hit .219 for the match, but Long Beach hit at a .340 clip. Fanfulik dished out 35 assists and Kelso finished with five blocks (four solo).

Kyle Ensing and TJ DeFalco led the 49ers with 17 kills apiece.

The Hawks will now return to Pepsi Arena for their home opener on Friday (Jan. 15) when they take on Carthage at 7 p.m.
