Hawks Fall in Four in Home Opener

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team claimed the first set over Carthage, but the Red Men won the next three to defeat Quincy, 15-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-20, on Friday (Jan. 15) night in the Hawks' home opener at Pepsi Arena.
 
Outside of committing eight service errors in the first set, the Hawks (0-4) got off to a great start to the match. After trailing 10-9 in the opening frame, the Hawks scored nine of the next 10 points with separate service runs by freshman David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney) and junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby). Siebum recorded three straight aces to give QU a 13-10 edge during the run.
 
After a Carthage timeout, senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) took over. The outside hitter recorded kills on six of Quincy's final 12 points as he finished the set with seven kills on seven swings.
 
QU hit .684 in Set 1, putting down 14 kills with just one error in 19 attacks. Meanwhile, the Hawks held the Red Men to a .231 hitting percentage.
 
Quincy's offensive fortunes changed in Set 2 as the Red Men (1-0) held the home team to a minus-.190 mark with the Hawks hitting into 10 errors. In Set 3, Carthage continued to step up its blocking game, making five stops at the net after recording four in the second game. Quincy led Set 3, 16-13, but the Red Men scored four straight to take a 17-16 lead. Kelso's kill tied it back up, but Carthage pulled away for the 25-21 win.
 
The Hawks led Set 4 in the early-going, 6-4, before Carthage scored four in a row and never gave up the lead after that point.
 
Lawson led the Hawks with 18 kills (.344), while senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) added a his first double-double of the season with 10 kills and 13 digs. Junior setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) dished out 33 assists and had seven digs.
 
The Red Men out-hit Quincy, .284 to .206. Griffin Shields had five of his team-high 12 kills in the clinching fourth set.
 
The Hawks return to action next Friday (Jan. 22) when they take on Culver-Stockton in the first match of the CSC Invitational in Canton, Mo.
