Hawks Pick Up First Two Wins Of 2016

CANTON, Mo. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team played with a split squad on Friday (Jan. 22) night and the Hawks came away with a pair of four-set victories – their first wins of the season.

One group of Hawks made the short drive to Canton, Mo. to defeat Culver-Stockton, 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-23), while the other squad picked up a 3-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-12, 25-19) win in Dubuque, Iowa against Loras.

Quincy 3, Culver-Stockton 1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-23)

After dropping the first set to the Wildcats (3-1), the Hawks (2-4) applied offensive pressure from the outset in Set 2 and picked up the 10-point victory.

Quincy quickly built an 11-4 lead with junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) putting down five kills and two service aces in that stretch. He finished with a match-high 14 kills (.579). The Hawks hit .423 and held the Wildcats to a .167 hitting percentage in the second set.

It was the Wildcats who carried the advantage in the early portions of Set 3, taking a 15-11 lead. The Hawks turned it around with a kill by senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) and a double block by Gamache and Kelso. Kelso's kill cut the deficit to 15-14 before the 'Cats stopped Quincy's run with a kill.

Quincy then scored the next four points with senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City) serving to give the Hawks an 18-16 edge.

The Hawks closed the set by erasing nearly every CSC attack with a block at the net. Quincy scored five of its final seven points of the game with a block. Kelso picked up four of his team-high six in that stretch. His high school classmate Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) added two blocks as well.

In Set 4, the Hawks staved off a late rally by the Wildcats, who tied the game at 23-23. The Hawks closed the match with kills by senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) and Chappelle.

The Hawks out-hit the Wildcats, .241 to .126. Chappelle (12 kills, .292) and Gamache (10 kills, .240) joined Kelso in double figures in kills. Fanfulik dished out 40 assists and sophomore libero Collin Merk (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) led the back row with nine digs.

Quincy 3, Loras 1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-12, 25-19)

The Hawks and Duhawks played a tight first set that saw eight tie scores and three lead changes, but Quincy pulled out a 26-24 win. Quincy fought off set point on a kill by freshman David Pyles (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt South). Sophomore JB Brinkerhoff (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby/Lewis) followed with a kill to give QU set point before freshman Noah Randall (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) finished off the Duhawks (1-2) with an ace.

Quincy trailed Set 2, 12-3, in the early-going before rallying to eventually take a 22-21 lead. The Duhawks scored the next two points before sophomore Anthony Winter (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/St. Edward) put down a kill to tie the game at 23-23. Loras responded by closing out the set with two straight points.

QU then shut down the Duhawks with terrific defense, getting eight blocks in the final two sets and forcing the hosts to hit minus-.006.

Pyles finished with a match-high 14 kills (.667) and had four of his team-high five blocks in the fourth set. Brinkerhoff added nine kills (.074) and five aces and senior Ty Coutts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty/Johnson & Wales) added eight kills (.462) and four aces.

Randall and freshman Adam Rogan (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) shared the setting duties. The latter finished with 23 assists and the former had 17.

Quincy out-hit Loras, .243 to .124. The Hawks also totaled 13 service aces, their most in a match in just over a year as they had 14 aces against King on Jan. 17, 2014.

The Hawks return to action with a full squad on Saturday (Jan. 23) at the Culver-Stockton Invitational. Quincy will play Morningside at 9:30 a.m. before taking the floor again against Ottawa at 2:30 p.m.
