Hawks Go 4-0 On Weekend With Two Saturday Wins

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team swept a pair of matches on Saturday (Jan. 23) at the Culver-Stockton Invitational to improve to go 4-0 on the weekend.
 
The Hawks (4-4) soundly defeated Morningside in straight sets, 25-15, 25-19, 25-21, in the morning before taking down Ottawa in four games, 25-12, 25-22, 20-25, 25-17, during the afternoon session.
 
The matches served as the final tune-up before the Hawks open Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play next Friday (Jan. 29) against No. 7 Ohio State at Pepsi Arena.
 
Quincy 3, Morningside 0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-21)
 
The Hawks turned in a dominant performance against the Mustangs (2-3), especially in the first set when they limited Morningside to a minus-.094 hitting percentage and picked up 5.5 blocks. Quincy finished with 13 blocks in the match, compared to just one for Morningside.
 
Quincy got five kills on seven attacks from senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City) in the first set.
 
In Set 2, the Hawks used a 4-0 run with senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) serving to stretch an 18-15 lead into a 22-15 advantage.
 
The Hawks never scored more than three straight points in Set 3, but got sideouts on 85 percent of the Mustangs' serves to close out the match.
 
Senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) recorded four of his team-leading nine kills in the third set. Junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) finished with eight kills (.583) and seven blocks and Chappelle had seven kills (.538) with no errors to go with a team-best six digs.
 
Junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) and freshman Adam Rogan (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) shared setting duties with Fanfulik dishing out 21 assists. Rogan had 13 assists. The Hawks hit .322 for the match, while limiting the Mustangs to a .133 mark.
 
Raul Rivera Rojas paced the Mustangs with nine kills (.125) and Caden Toben had 14 assists.
 
Quincy 3, Ottawa 1 (25-12, 25-22, 20-25, 25-17)
 
The Hawks came out on fire in Set 1 against the Braves (1-4), hitting .643 in the first set and limiting Ottawa to a minus-.100 mark. QU committed just one error and had 10 kills in the first set.
 
The teams traded the lead six times in Set 2, but none came after senior Ty Coutts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty/Johnson & Wales) went on a 4-0 serving run, including one ace, to take a 19-16 lead. Chappelle had a solo block and Kelso added a kill in the run.
 
The Braves hit .333 in Set 3 to take the 25-20 decision. In Set 4, the Hawks trailed 10-9 before Chappelle scored five straight from behind the service line to help Quincy pull away. Two straight kills by Kelso and a Gamache ace ended the match.
 
Kelso led the Hawks with 14 kills (.667) and Chappelle added 11 kills (.179). Gamache was efficient with eight kills (.438) and just one error to go with a team-high three aces. Quincy finished with 10 aces in the match. Sophomore Simon Bruckner (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) led the back row with nine digs.
 
Daniel Jacobs led all offensive players with 25 kills (.264). Dalton Sayers had 30 assists and 10 digs for Ottawa.
 
The Hawks return to the floor on Friday (Jan. 29) at 7 p.m. to take on No. 7 Ohio State at Pepsi Arena. It will be the first of three straight home MIVA matches for Quincy.
