#7 Ohio State Defeats Quincy in MIVA Opener at Pepsi Arena

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team opened Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play on Friday (Jan. 29) night, but the Hawks were turned away by No. 7 Ohio State, 25-21, 25-13, 25-23, in front of a boisterous crowd at Pepsi Arena.

The Buckeyes (6-2, 1-0 MIVA) hit a blistering .451 for the match while holding Quincy (4-5, 0-1 MIVA) to a .227 mark.

The Hawks trailed in Set 1, 10-8, before going on a 4-0 run with the help of senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) on the serve. He capped the run with an ace, one of three in the match for Quincy.

Quincy still led by two, 15-13, before the Buckeyes tied the set with two straight points. The visitors eventually took an 18-17 lead on a Miles Johnson block and would not trail after that point.

In Set 2, the Buckeyes hit .667 and the Hawks were held to a minus-.053 percentage. Ohio State scored the game's first four points and never looked back.

The Hawks led through the early portions of Set 3 and forced an Ohio State timeout after taking a 9-5 lead with a double block from senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) and junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby).

The Buckeyes finally tied the game at 15-15 and then Nicolas Szerszen served up one of OSU's four aces to give the visitors the lead. The teams then traded several sideouts before a 2-0 run by the Buckeyes pushed their lead to 24-21. QU fought off two match points with an Ohio State attacking error and Kelso's kill, but after OSU head coach called timeout, Christian Franceschi finished the match with a kill.

Lawson led the Hawks with eight kills (.190). Senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City) added seven kills (.375) and a team-high eight digs. Junior setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) dished out 22 assists, had five kills on five attacks and put in two service aces.

Szerszen led the Buckeyes with 19 kills (.500) and two aces. Libero Gabriel Domecus finished with a match-high 10 digs.

The Hawks return to Pepsi Arena next Friday (Feb. 5) at 7 p.m. when they take on last year's national runner-up, No. 13 Lewis.
