Lady Hawks Topple No. 1 Grand Valley State, 3-0

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer team came out for its opening scene of the 2015 season and gave the fans at Legends Stadium a tremendous performance.

On a sweltering evening, the Lady Hawks turned back two-time defending national champion Grand Valley State, the top-ranked team in the country, 3-0, on Friday (Sept. 4) night.

A well-organized defense and unrelenting counterattack gave the Lakers fits as Quincy won its first game over the Michigan school in 13 all-time games.

The Lady Hawks withstood a couple shots in the early minutes before a quick counter gave the hosts an edge. Senior Taylor Lindwedel (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) carried the ball into the attacking third and played a pass toward the end line. Senior Natalie Kuhlenberg (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) lofted a cross to the back post for senior Ashley Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville), who headed it home to give QU a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute.
Just 15 seconds after the goal, reigning NSCAA National Player of the Year Marti Corby drilled the woodwork, but it stayed out and sophomore keeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) covered it.

The Lakers (0-1) maintained much of the possession in the first half and out-shot the Lady Hawks, 14-3, but many of those shots came from distance as QU's experienced back four remained organized and Swanson was up to the task.

In the final minute of the half, the Lady Hawks broke through with a second goal as Burton played a short pass to a running Abby Pulliam (St. Louis, Mo./Eureka), who struck it past GVSU keeper Emily Maresh with just 36 seconds remaining to halftime.
As the second half wore on, the Lady Hawks saw more of the ball and effectively put the game away in the 63rd minute. Senior Haylye Markway (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) had her header off a corner kick cleared off the line, but senior center back Maxine Peat (St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) was there for the rebound, heading in the first goal of her career.Grand Valley State out-shot the Lady Hawks, 25-7, for the game, including 13 shots from Corby. The back four made sure those shots came from distance and they did not allow space for the junior to get over top of her shots, keeping her off rhythm and making her turn for space.

Swanson, for her part, made 13 saves – the most by a QU goalkeeper since at least the 2006 season. Marish made one save for Grand Valley State.

The Lakers held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Lady Hawks return to the field on Sunday (Sept. 6) when they take on Ferris State at Legends Stadium.
