Lady Hawks Score Three In Second Half To Down Ferris

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer team created nearly all the scoring opportunities on Sunday (Sept. 6) against Ferris State at Legends Stadium. The chances finally paid off in the second half as the Lady Hawks scored three times on their way to a 3-0 shutout win over the Bulldogs.

Quincy is now 2-0 on the season after knocking off No. 1 Grand Valley State on Friday, while the Bulldogs fell to 0-2.

The Lady Hawks generated all the attack in the first half, keeping the ball in the Ferris State end and applying relentless pressure. The Ferris State defense and goalkeeper Maddie Haustein kept the ball out of the back of the net, making nine saves in the first half.

On a scorching day with temperatures in the mid-90s, the finishing touches did not come until the second half.

Quincy finally broke through in the 57th minute as a corner kick taken by junior Maddy Kuhlenberg (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) sailed to the far post and was deflected into the back of the net by a Ferris State defender for an own goal.

The chances kept coming for Quincy, though the visitors were able to maintain more possession in the second half, firing two shots on goal at sophomore keeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic).

The Lady Hawks doubled their lead in the 81st minute when junior Caroline Basler (Pevely, Mo./St. Pius X) sent in a low cross that senior Ashley Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) settled and calmly poked into the far post unmarked. It was Burton's second goal of the season.

QU removed all doubt in the 87th minute as freshman Abby Pulliam (St. Louis, Mo./Eureka) clinically tucked a cross from Burton inside the far post to stretch the Lady Hawks' lead to 3-0.

Quincy out-shot Ferris State, 23-3, and led in corner kicks, 6-0.

The Lady Hawks will now have just two days to rehydrate and bring their legs back before returning to the field on Wednesday (Sept. 9) when they travel to Southwest Baptist to take on the Bearcats, led by former QU assistant coach Megan Link. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
