First Half Flurry Sends #9 Quincy Past UWP

QUINCY, Ill. – The ninth-ranked Quincy University men's soccer team and UW-Parkside played a wild first half that featured five goals and saw the Hawks leading, 3-2, at halftime.

It seemed as if the score line would continue to rise after the intermission, but the Hawks and Rangers stayed off the board and the home team came away with a 3-2 win at Legends Stadium on Friday (Sept. 18) night.

The Hawks (4-1, 3-0 GLVC) have been known as an offensive force in four seasons under head coach Mike Carpenter and that was on display for the home fans early on.

Quincy broke through in the seventh minute as junior Taylor Reis (Quincy, Ill./QND) got on the end of a low-driven cross from the right side by sophomore Artan Emini (Yorkville, Ill.) and touched in at the near post to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. It was Reis' second goal of the campaign and Emini's team-leading third assist.

Just four minutes later, the Rangers equalized when Eric Moser lifted a casual long ball forward for Jaime Colin, who picked the ball out of the air and chipped it over the head of keeper Nate Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./CBC).

The Hawks regained the lead in the 36th minute as sophomore Conner Sendobry (St. Louis, Mo./CBC/UW-Green Bay) got on the end of a free kick by junior Xhovani Dokaj (St. Louis, Mo./CBC). Sendobry's header was saved, but it came to the foot of sophomore Jordan Stephens (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell), who got over top and drove it home for his first goal of the year.

The final minute of the half was a blur. Dokaj picked out freshman Eddie Plesha (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) on a long ball from midfield to put the rookie one-on-one with the keeper. Plesha coolly worked around the keeper and slid it into the right side for his first career marker.

That goal came with 33 seconds left in the half. Just 28 ticks later, the referee whistled the Hawks for a handball in the box and Ryan Shogren converted a penalty kick with five seconds to go in the half and cut the lead to 3-2.

That score would hold up in the second half as the Hawks led in shots, 7-6, over the final 45 minutes. Quincy had four shots on goal after halftime while Griffin was called upon just once. He finished with two saves in the game.

Quincy out-shot UWP, 15-11, overall and won the battle in corner kicks, 7-4.

The Hawks return to Jack Mackenzie Field at Legends Stadium on Sunday (Sept. 20) at 2:30 p.m. when they kick off against Lewis (0-4-1, 0-2-1 GLVC).
