#9 Hawks Earn 3-1 Home Win Over Lewis

QUINCY, Ill. – The ninth-ranked Quincy University men's soccer team saw Lewis take a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute on Sunday (Sept. 20), but head coach Mike Carpenter has preached all season about the importance of his team's response to conceding a goal.

There was no panic from the Quincy side at Legends Stadium and the Hawks answered with a goal just before halftime and two more in the second half to soundly beat 10-man Lewis, 3-1.

The Hawks (5-1, 4-0 GLVC) saw nearly all the possession in the first half before Nicholas Monteiro came free on the counterattack down the right side off a pass from Edgar Garcia. Monteiro coolly knocked the shot past QU keeper Nate Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead.

Quincy saw some good fortune in the 31st minute when Krystian Nowak went into the referee's book for a second time in the game and was sent off, forcing Lewis (0-5-1, 0-3-1 GLVC) to play with 10 men for the duration of the game.

Playing up a man allowed the Hawks the freedom to move the ball around in the Lewis half of the field and open up scoring opportunities. They out-shot the Flyers, 26-5, for the game.

Quincy's possession paid off in the 42nd minute when junior Xhovani Dokaj (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) sent in a corner kick for sophomore Conner Sendobry (St. Louis, Mo./CBC/UW-Green Bay), who rose over everyone with a powerful header inside the near post. It was Sendobry's second goal and Dokaj's third assist of the season.

The Hawks took the lead just two minutes after halftime when sophomore Artan Emini (Yorkville, Ill.) ran onto a long ground pass from redshirt-freshman Kyle Fraser (Helston, U.K./Helston Community Prep) and chipped his shot over the goalkeeper from near the end line and into the net. It was Emini's second goal and Fraser's first assist.

The hosts effectively put the game away in the 71st minute when Emini beat a defender and played a short pass for junior Taylor Reis (Quincy, Ill./QND), who completed a sublime one-touch past the keeper at the near post to give Quincy a 3-1 lead. Reis leads the Hawks with three goals and Emini has a team-high four assists.

The Hawks led on corner kicks, 7-1. Griffin made one save in goal for QU, while his counterpart Aaron Menyes made five stops.

The Hawks will hit the road for a game at Saint Joseph's (3-2, 2-2 GLVC) on Friday (Sept. 25) at 7:30 p.m.
