Reserves Play Key Role in #6 Quincy's Win at Maryville

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer team extended their early-season unbeaten streak to five on Sunday (Sept. 13) with a 2-1 win at Maryville in GLVC action in St. Louis.

The Lady Hawks (4-0-1, 1-0-1 GLVC) earned their first win of the conference season in a game where both teams had plenty of chances to net goals.

Quincy got on the board early in the game as sophomore midfielder Allison Birke (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic/SLU) found the back of the net for the first time this season, tucking a pass from senior midfielder Taylor Lindwedel (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) inside the left post. It was Lindwedel's second assist of the year.

The Lady Hawks outshot the Saints (1-2-1, 0-1-1 GLVC), 11-6, in the first half and they were turned away by MU goalkeeper Madison Buelow four times in the first 45 minutes.

The Saints had much of the possession in the second half, leading in shots, 8-2, and corner kicks, 4-0.

That made Quincy's second goal even more important when head coach Dave Musso called on his reserves to create a goal.

Junior forward Caroline Basler (Pevely, Mo./St. Pius X) sent in a cross for junior midfielder Gabby Herrick (St. Louis, Mo./Eureka), who put the ball over the line for her first career goal. Basler recorded her first career assist and it helped Quincy gain a 2-0 lead.

Maryville cut the lead in half in the 87th minute as Shannon Foley knocked in a header off a free kick.

The Lady Hawks were able to see out the final three minutes, 45 seconds and fought off a corner kick in the waning seconds to secure the win.

Sophomore keeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) finished with four saves with another save coming from the QU defense clearing a ball off the line.

Freshman forward Abby Pulliam (St. Louis, Mo./Eureka) made her first career start and led the Lady hawks with five total shots. Overall, the hosts led in shots, 14-13 and corners, 4-1.

The Lady Hawks return to Legends Stadium on Friday (Sept. 18) when they play host to UW-Parkside (2-2, 1-1 GLVC) in a GLVC contest at 5 p.m.
