#6 Lady Hawks Draw Tritons in 1-1 Battle

QUINCY, Ill. – The No. 6 Quincy University women's soccer team locked in a battle with Missouri-St. Louis on Friday (Sept. 11) night at Legends Stadium and the teams finished tied, 1-1, after two overtimes could not decide a winner. It was the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams.

The game was played at a frantic pace with the teams combining for 43 shots (UMSL 23, QU 20). Both teams had several chances to put in a winner, but the game ended with just two goals.

Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) finished with 11 saves on the night, giving her two double-digit save totals in four games this season. She stopped 13 shots against Grand Valley State on Sept. 4.

The game was mostly even until the Lady Hawks (2-0-1, 0-0-1 GLVC) opened the scoring in the 30th minute.

Sophomore defender Natalie Quisenberry (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) won the ball near midfield and sent in a long diagonal ball that senior midfielder Ashley Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) ran onto and bodied over the goal line for her fifth goal of the season. It was Quisenberry's first assist of the season.

The Lady Hawks maintained much of the attack for the remainder of the half, but were not able to get on the board again before halftime.

The Tritons (1-0-1, 0-0-1 GLVC) applied more pressure in the second half and got the equalizer in the 59th minute as Kayla Delgado slipped a through ball to Miriam Taylor, who beat Swanson one-on-one.

The visitors missed on a few chances late in the second half, but Swanson was up to the task and kept the game knotted going into overtime.

In the first overtime period, the Lady Hawks threatened off an early corner kick, but Burton's header bounced off the turf and drilled the crossbar before the Tritons could clear.

UMSL keeper Megan Ohm came up with two crucial saves minutes later, saving a header by senior midfielder Haylye Markway (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) and a good look by freshman striker Abby Pulliam (St. Louis, Mo./Eureka).

Swanson answered with two saves in the first overtime as the Tritons took aim five times at the QU goal.

Each team got off just one shot in the second overtime and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Lady Hawks had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Ohm made six total saves for the Tritons. Pulliam led QU with seven shots.

The Lady Hawks return to the field on Sunday (Sept. 13) when they travel to Maryville for a noon kickoff.
