Hawks Earn Trip Back to GLVC Championship

WESTFIELD, Ind. - The Quincy University baseball team won the rematch with William Jewell College, but this time it was in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.  WJC swept QU in the regular season at QU Stadium.  The Hawks took their revenge on Saturday in Westfield, Ind. at Grand Park with a 5-0 win to eliminate the Cardinals and earn a trip back to the GLVC Championship.

The Hawks (39-14) received another great performance from a starter as Graham Spraker (W, 5-1) dealt eight innings of scoreless baseball allowing four hits and striking out three.  Matt Norton shut the door in the ninth to secure the second shutout of the GLVC Tournament for QU and the 14th straight victory.

The Cardinals (37-17) tossed Billy Kirkpatrick (L, 4-4) for five innings.  Kirkpatrick held QU scoreless and hitless for the first three innings of play.

Kirkpatrick ran into trouble with two walks and one out in the fourth inning.  JP Meyer singled to load the bases for Peter Cunningham.  Cunningham drilled a fastball to the right center gap to clear the bases with a triple.  The senior brought home Ryan Snyder, Dominic Miles, and Meyer to claim a 3-0 lead for QU.

Dominic Miles tripled to deep center and was brought home by JP Meyer on a single to center.

The Hawks scored one more run when Justin Blechle singled to score JP Meyer in the eighth inning.

Graham Spraker's biggest strikeout came in the eighth inning.  With the bases loaded and one out, Spraker got a ground out to Cunningham who fired home to get the second out of the inning.  With a 3-2 count on Bryan Porting, Spraker threw a high fastball that got Porting swinging for strike three leaving the bases loaded and the Cardinals scoreless.

The QU defense had three twin killings in the game.

Quincy will play the University of Southern Indiana or Drury University in the GLVC Championship tomorrow at 11 a.m. ET.  This is the Hawks' second consecutive trip to the GLVC Championship game.  QU last won the GLVC Tournament Championship in 2011.
