Hawks Fall to Panthers in GLVC Championship

WESTFIELD, Ind. - The Quincy University baseball team fell to Drury University in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship game on Sunday, 7-2.  A late inning rally by DU lifted the Panthers over QU in the title match.  The Hawks scored first, but left 11 runners on base.

JP Meyer gave the Hawks (39-15) the jolt they needed early with a homerun to left field.  He scored Dominic Miles who doubled right before Meyer in the second inning.  Justin Blechle followed with a double, but was stranded at third base.

Mark Niebrugge (L, 7-2) kept the lead for the Hawks through five innings.  Drury (31-22-1) scratched one across after an error at shortstop extended the inning.  They went on to tie the game in the sixth on a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly by Luke Tewes.

Niebrugge threw eight innings allowing five earned runs on eight hits.  The Panthers broke the game open in the eighth inning with a pair of doubles by Ryan Colombo and Dallas Williams.  Tyler Arthur connected on a three-run homer to right field giving Drury a 6-2 lead.

The Panthers would score again in the ninth to secure the 7-2 victory and the GLVC Championship.  With the win, Drury received the automatic bid from the GLVC into the Midwest Regional Tournament.

Austin Simms, Austin Faulconer (W, 7-5), and Gage Jacobs combined for six and a third innings of scoreless baseball for the Panthers to close the game.

The Hawks left runners in scoring position in five of the nine innings on Sunday.

Quincy will await the NCAA Division II Selection Show tonight at 9 p.m. CT to see if they will hold the number one seed in the Midwest Regional Tournament.
