Blechle Throws Out UMSL for Day One Sweep

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team extended their winning streak to nine games with a day one sweep of the University of Missouri-St. Louis.  It was not as easy as it sounded.  Both games were one run wins for QU and both games UMSL had a runner in scoring position when the final out was made.  In game two Justin Blechle was the hero with a solo homer and the game-winning out when he gunned out Kevin Smith at the plate to preserve a 2-1 win.  The Hawks won game one 5-4 with all five QU runs coming from the three homers.

The Hawks (34-14, 25-9 GLVC) had plenty of pop in their bats today with four homeruns in two games.  The Tritons (25-15, 17-15 GLVC) added two homers of their own on the day.

Dominic Miles left the yard in the third inning to right field on a towering shot to right field that was 10 yards left of the foul pole.  Ryan Snyder scored on Miles' third homer of the season.  JP Meyer hammered the very next pitch to the same part of the park for an opposite field blast to go back-to-back with Miles.  It was Meyer's first homerun of the season.

Brynn Martinez homered in the sixth inning of game one to left field to bring home Peter Cunningham and give the Hawks a 5-0 lead.  It was Martinez's third homer of the season.

Daniel Seddon answered for UMSL in the seventh inning on a homer to right center to start a rally.  The Tritons scored one more run in the seventh.

Mark Niebrugge (W, 7-1) earned his seventh win of the season pitching seven innings and allowing one earned run on eight hits with three strikeouts.

Dylan Fieth doubled in the eighth inning to score another run for the Tritons.

Teddy Rule (S, 10) came on in the ninth inning and allowed two hits and one strikeouts with one unearned run.  The Hawks were charged with three errors in game one and allowed 12 hits, but Rule left runners stranded on first and third with a strikeout to earn his 10th save of the season.

JJ Kinnevan homered in the third inning of a second game pitchers duel to give UMSL a 1-0 lead.

Zach Sedlacek (L, 5-3) threw six innings for the Tritons for the complete game.  He allowed two earned runs on five hits and five walks.  The senior held QU scoreless for the first four innings of the game.

His counterpart, Graham Spraker went five innings allowing one earned run with four hits and four walks allowed.

Kory Wisdom walked in the fifth inning with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  David Jacob moved Wisdom over and Ryan Snyder delivered with a line drive single to left center to score Wisdom and tie the game.

After Matt Norton (W 1-2) guided his way through a scoreless inning allowing one hit, the stage was set for Justin Blechle.  The junior came up with one out and took the first pitch he saw deep over the right center wall.  His fourth homerun was a no doubter that sailed well onto the football field.

Brandon Ley (S, 2) took the mound with a 2-1 lead and put runners on first and second with two walks and one out.  Ley got a big swinging strikeout to get out number two.  Jarret Clark singled to center fielder Justin Blechle and Kevin Smith rounded third.  Blechle came up firing and threw a perfect laser beam right to Gordon Gundaker who stopped a sliding Smith from touching home with a perfectly timed play at the plate.

The Hawks and Tritons are back at it tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at noon at QU Stadium.  Prior to the game one start, the Hawks will celebrate senior day on the field.
