Hawks Sweep to GLVC West Division Title

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team extended their winning streak to 11 games with a sweep of the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday.  QU also claimed the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division regular season crown and the No. 1 seed in the GLVC Championship Tournament next week in Westfield, Ind.

The Hawks (36-14, 27-9 GLVC) leaned on their offense and some UMSL (25-17, 17-17 GLVC) miscues to take game one 11-7.  QU had a great pitching performance by Jake Peterson (W, 4-4) in game two, and timely hitting by Dominic Miles and Ryan Snyder to outlast the Tritons in game two 3-2.

UMSL took the lead on an RBI single by Jarret Clark and a one run double by Jake Beckwith to put the pressure on QU in the first inning.

Ryan Snyder answered in the bottom half with a two run homerun to left; his first of the season to tie the game.

Tommy Hager (W, 5-0) held the Tritons scoreless over the next two innings to set the QU offense up for a couple big innings.

The Hawks had the bases loaded in the second inning when an error by the shortstop extended the inning.  The Hawks took advantage of the mistake and scored six runs highlighted by an RBI single from Dominic Miles and three run triple by JP Meyer.

Gordon Gundaker tripled with one out in the third inning and Brynn Martinez brought him home on an error by the third baseman.  Martinez stole second and later scored on a David Jacob double to right center to extend the lead to 11-2.

Dylan Fieth started a comeback attempt by UMSL in the top of the fourth with a two run homer to left center.

After another UMSL run in the fifth, the Hawks entered the top of the seventh with an 11-5 lead and Jason O'Brien on the mound.  Justin Busekrus knocked a two run homer out to left field, but O'Brien settled in after that to get three straight outs for the game one win on Sunday.

After a high-scoring game one, Luke Hayes (L, 2-3) and Jake Peterson settled in for a pitchers duel in the second contest.

Ryan Snyder broke the scoreless game in the third inning with an RBI single through the left side to score Brynn Martinez.

Dominic Miles emptied the bases with a two run triple to deep center in the sixth inning to give Jake Peterson and the Hawks some breathing room.

Peterson was lifted at the start of the seventh inning after allowing just two hits in a scoreless six innings pitched.  Matt Norton entered the game and allowed one hit, but made an athletic play on a ball hit up over the mound that he snagged out of the air and doubled off Dylan Fieth at first to end the inning.

UMSL scored two runs in the eighth inning to pull within one run.  Brandon Ley got a big strikeout with the bases loaded to end the threat.

The Tritons put runners on the corners against Teddy Rule (S, 11) in the ninth inning, but Rule got a ground out to Justin Blechle to finish off the sweep.

David Jacob was 2-for-4 in both games recording three runs scored and two RBI.  Dominic Miles was 2-for-3 in game one with two RBI and two runs followed up by a 2-for-4 performance in game two with two more RBI.  Ryan Snyder finished the day 3-for-7 with four RBI and three runs scored including a two run homerun.

The Hawks earned the top seed in the GLVC Championship Tournament and will play the eight seed Missouri S&T on day one in Westfield, Ind.  QU won the season series with S&T, 3-1, on the road.  The time of the QU vs. S&T game has yet to be determined.
