Hawks Pitchers Hold McKendree to Two Runs in Midweek Sweep

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team picked up a pair of wins against McKendree University on Tuesday (Apr. 7) when the QU pitching staff allowed just two runs in the doubleheader sweep.  Daniel Schnicker and Jason O'Brien earned the wins for the Hawks.  The QU offense provided two runs on five hits in game one, and seven runs on 13 hits in game two.

David Jacob started the rally for the Hawks (18-11) in the second inning of game one.  Jacob hit a lined shot back to the pitcher that got away for a base hit.  Ryan Snyder followed with a double down the right field line that sent Jacob to third.  Peter Cunningham grounded out to shortstop to bring home Jacob and move Snyder to third.  Tommy Hager followed with a double down the left field line to score Snyder and give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

McKendree (7-21) scored in the top of the fourth inning with two outs when they had runners on first and third.  Tyson Boehne scored on a wild pitch to give the Bearcats their only run.

Daniel Schnicker (W, 2-0) allowed one run on two hits with one walk and three strikeouts.  Schnicker was relieved by Matt Norton who threw the sixth inning allowing one hit and striking out one for the hold.  Teddy Rule (S, 6) earned his sixth save with throwing the seventh inning allowing one hit and striking out one in a scoreless frame.

The QU offense came out of the gates running in game two.  Brynn Martinez started with a single to left field followed by another single to left by Kory Wisdom.  Martinez was thrown out at third on the play, but Wisdom advanced to second on the throw.  David Jacob singled through the left side to advance Wisdom to third.  Ryan Snyder singled to score Wisdom and move Jacob up to second.  Dominic Miles grounded out to advance the runners.  Peter Cunningham singled to right field to score Jacob.  Tommy Hager doubled to deep left center to score Snyder and Cunningham giving QU a 4-0 lead.

The Hawks added three more in the fourth inning.  Graham Spraker singled to shortstop for his first hit of the season.  JP Meyer singled on a line drive up the middle to move Spraker to second.  Brynn Martinez laid down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by the pitcher and thrown down the third base line trying to get Spraker and third.  Spraker and Meyer scored with Martinez moving to second.  Kory Wisdom followed with a single up the middle to score Martinez giving the Hawks a 7-0 lead.

Jason O'Brien (W, 2-2) was sharp for the second straight outing and the QU defense was strong behind him.  Brynn Martinez made a diving play on a line drive in the first inning and JP Meyer gunned down a runner at home to end the first inning.  Tommy Hager made an over the shoulder grab in right field in the fourth inning to keep the Bearcats from scoring.

McKendree got on the board when David Jacob had a ball bounce out of his glove after hitting the runner's helmet.  Tyson Boehne doubled to left center and John Tolliver singled to bring home one run.  O'Brien got a foul out to end the inning.

O'Brien allowed one unearned run on six hits with two walks.  O'Brien struck out two in six innings of work.  Evan Cahn threw the seventh inning allowing one hit.

The Hawks won game two 7-1 thanks in part to the top of the order.  Brynn Martinez was two for two with a run scored.  Kory Wisdom was three for three with a run and an RBI.  David Jacob was two for four with a run.  Every QU starter got a hit in game two.

The Hawks travel to Rolla, Mo. this weekend (Apr. 11-12) to play Missouri S&T in a Great Lakes Valley Conference four-game series.  Both doubleheaders are scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
