Hawks Split a Pair of One Run Games with Miners

ROLLA, Mo. - The Quincy University baseball team split the opening day doubleheader against Missouri S&T on Saturday (Apr. 11) with a 5-4 loss in game one and a 6-5 win in game two.  After S&T had some late inning heroics in game one, QU showed a flair for the dramatic in game two tying the game in the seventh inning to force extras and then winning in the ninth.  

The Hawks (19-12, 13-7 GLVC) struck first in game one in the top of the second.  JP Meyer got things started with a single up the middle.  Tommy Hager singled moving Meyer to third.  Gordon Gundaker walked to load the bases and Chris Ward flied out to center to sacrifice Meyer home for the first run of the game.  A wild pitch scored Hager and Brynn Martinez singled to bring home Gundaker to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead.

S&T (19-12, 14-6 GLVC) got a run back in the fourth inning when Tyler Johnson doubled and later scored on a Lance Portwood single. 

Quincy answered when Dominic Miles was hit with one out.  He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by JP Meyer.  Tommy Hager singled to score Miles to give QU a 4-1 lead.

The Miners added runs in the sixth and seventh inning to pull within one run.

Mark Niebrugge started game one for the Hawks allowing three runs, two earned, and eight hits in seven innings.  Matt Norton relieved him in the eighth with a scoreless inning to bring on Teddy Rule (L, 0-1) for the save opportunity.

The Miners started the inning with a walk and then bunted the runner over with a sacrifice.  After a strikeout, Tyler Bodenstab singled with two outs to score the game-tying run.  Bodenstab stole second and Trevor Karbowski came up with the walk-off single up the middle to win game one 5-4 for the Miners.

In game two, the Miners scored one run in the second to put the Hawks down 1-0 early. 

David Jacob singled home Brynn Martinez in the third inning after a two out rally to tie the game at 1-1.

The Hawks took the lead in the fourth inning when JP Meyer doubled to score Dominic Miles who walked to lead of the inning.  QU got two outs with Meyer on second, but Chris Ward came throught wth a single to right center to score Meyer giving the Hawks a 3-1 lead.  

Missouri S&T retook the lead with a four run fifth inning including three doubles and two singles to put the Hawks down 5-3.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, Ryan Snyder doubled to put runners on second and third.  Dominic Miles singled up the middle to bring home David Jacob and Snyder to tie the game at 5-5 sending it to extra innings.  

Jake Wehde (W, 5-1) tossed three scoreless innings to earn the win for the Hawks.  He allowed just one runner to reach second base in a brilliant outing with three strikeouts.

The Hawks capped off the win in the ninth inning.  Chris Ward singled to start the inning, but was thrown out on a Brynn Martinez bunt.  After another out, David Jacob walked to move Martinez to second base.  Ryan Snyder singled to left field to score Martinez to give the Hawks a 6-5 lead.

Wehde shut it down in the bottom half for the QU victory.

Ryan Snyder was three for five in game two with the winning RBI.  Chris Ward was three for four with an RBI in game two in his first doubleheader start of the season.  

The Hawks and Miners square off for another doubleheader tomorrow (Apr. 12) in Rolla, Mo. starting at noon.
