Hawks Sweep Sunday to Tie for First in GLVC West

ROLLA, Mo. - The Quincy University baseball team swept the Sunday (Apr. 12) doubleheader against Missouri S&T to earn a tie for first in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division with William Jewell College.  Quincy relied on timely hitting and strong pitching performances by Tommy Hager (W, 2-0) and Jake Peterson (W, 2-3) to earn a pair of wins.  QU won three of four from S&T this weekend with a split on Saturday (Apr. 11).

Brynn Martinez started the Hawks' (21-12, 15-7 GLVC) offense in the top of the first with a single.  Martinez stole second base and Kory Wisdom walked to bring up David Jacob.  Jacob singled to left field to score Martinez giving QU a 1-0 lead.

The first two Miners (19-14, 14-8 GLVC) struckout, but Tyler Bodenstab reached on a wild pitch.  Trevor Karbowski doubled to score Bodenstab and knot up the game at 1-1.  Gordon Gundaker threw out Lance Portwood on an attempt to steal second later in the inning to eliminate the threat.

Brynn Martinez got the Hawks rolling again in the third inning.  The freshman singled on a bunt and again stole second base.  Martinez advanced to third on a wild pitch and Kory Wisdom singled to score Martinez.  Wisdom moved to second on an error by the right fielder.  After an out, Ryan Snyder singled to bring home Wisdom.  Dominic Miles singled through the right side and Zach Knese singled up the middle to score Snyder to cap off the QU three-run inning.

The Hawks would score three more runs in the sixth inning including a two-RBI single from JP Meyer.

Tommy Hager threw six innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out nine.  Hager earned the win in his first start of the season.

Matt Norton came in for the seventh inning to finish the game.  Norton allowed two hits and struck out one.

Eight of nine Hawks in the starting lineup recorded a hit.  QU had 10 hits in the 7-1 game one win.

The Hawks scored one run in the top of the second inning to gain the lead in game two.  Chris Ward hit a sacrifice fly and the Hawks never looked back.

David Jacob tripled in the third inning to score Kory Wisdom and Ryan Snyder doubled to score Jacob to start a three-run inning for the Hawks.

Kory Wisdom tallied his third hit of the game in the fourth inning to score Chris Ward.  Wisdom would finish the game four for four with a walk, a run, and an RBI.

Dominic Miles would tally the seventh run for the Hawks in the seventh inning when he stole home and Zach Knese stole second in a double steal.

S&T scored one in the fourth and one in the ninth to fall 7-2 to the Hawks.  Jake Peterson recorded his second win of the season allowing one run on eight hits and two walks in seven innings of work.  Peterson struck out eight.  Jake Wehde pitched the final two innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out three.

The Hawks welcome Truman State University to Quincy, Ill. on Tuesday (Apr. 14) for a midweek GLVC doubleheader.  The Hawks split with Truman State on Apr. 1 in Kirksville, Mo.  The doubleheader at QU Stadium is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
