Hawks Sweep into First in the GLVC West

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Quincy University baseball team completed the final inning of game three that was suspended due to rain yesterday (Apr. 25) and topped off the weekend sweep of Maryville University with a 3-0 shutout win in game four.  QU won the first game 11-7.  The Hawks moved into sole possession of first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division one game ahead of William Jewell College.

The Hawks (31-14, 23-9 GLVC) got on the board first yesterday when Justin Blechle launched his second homer of the season to right center scoring Zach Knese in the third inning.

Dalton Schumer answered with an RBI single in the bottom half of the third.  MU (17-29, 9-23 GLVC) held the Hawks in check until the fifth inning.

Brynn Martinez tripled to score Blechle in the fifth and Kory Wisdom singled to score Martinez.  A couple batters later, Dominic Miles singled to bring home Wisdom to give QU a 5-1 lead.

Mitch Carriger was 3-for-4 in the game with two RBI for the Saints.  The Saints collected 13 hits and pulled within one run in the sixth inning when they scored five runs.

The Hawks' offense was just as impressive in the last three innings.  QU scored three runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh inning.  Justin Blechle was 2-for-3 with a homer and a double knocking in three RBI and scoring three runs.  Dominic Miles was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.  Kory Wisdom and Brynn Martinez were 2-for-5 with two runs each.  Wisdom had two RBI and Martinez had one.

Tommy Hager (W, 4-0) threw four innings earning his fourth win of the season and third as a starter.  Hager allowed one earned run on seven hits with four strikeouts.

With the score 7-6, Matt Norton (S, 1) entered the game with two runners on.  He allowed a double in the sixth, but got two outs to hold onto the lead.  The rain came in the top of the seventh after Quincy scored three runs.  Norton came back today to finish off the 11-7 win for his first save of the season in an inning and two-thirds.

Jake Peterson (W, 3-4) started the final game of the series and threw a gem.  Peterson tossed a complete game shutout going nine innings allowing five hits and striking out five.  Peterson allowed only two runners to reach scoring position and faced the minimum in four of the nine innings.

With two outs, Justin Blechle hammered his third homerun of the season in the fourth inning in the form of a solo shot to give the Hawks the lead.  Gordon Gundaker provided an RBI single later in the inning to score Zach Knese.

Brynn Martinez doubled in the seventh inning with one out.  Kory Wisdom singled to score Martinez giving the Hawks the 3-0 lead.

Brynn Martinez was the only Hawk with a multi-hit game in the second game of the day.  Martinez was 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.

The Hawks will travel to Lebanon, Ill. on Wednesday (Apr. 29) to play McKendree University in a midweek non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
