#9 UIndy Rallies For Two Comeback Wins Over Lady Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team battled against No. 9 Indianapolis on Friday (April 24), but the Greyhounds came away with two come-from-behind wins over the Lady Hawks, 3-2 and 5-3, at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.

In Game 1, the Lady Hawks (18-26, 7-19 GLVC) got a strong pitching performance from sophomore Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) in Game 1. The Greyhounds (37-9, 22-4 GLVC) countered with Morgan Foley, the GLVC's leader in strikeouts, innings pitched and wins and the reigning national pitcher of the week.

After a scoreless top of the first, senior Alanna Viken (Mazon, Ill./Seneca) drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first off Foley. Senior Kelsey Ley (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame) then lifted a 1-2 pitch over the fence in left-center for her ninth homer of the season. That gave QU a 2-0 lead.

Harbison recorded four strikeouts in the first three innings before Natalie Lalich powered her ninth home run of the season to cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth. Erika Goodwin's RBI single through the middle tied the game in the bottom of the fifth.

Meanwhile, Foley kept the Lady Hawks off balance, allowing just three hits through the first five innings.

In the sixth, junior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./UT-Martin) reached on a one-out single and went to second when senior Emma Topps (Downers Grove, Ill./South) followed with a walk. Both runners advanced on a groundout, but with two down Foley ended the inning with a strikeout.

The Greyhounds scored the game-winning run in the seventh as Taylor Weck doubled, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Katie Kelly's sacrifice fly.

Senior Mackenzie Fox (Beardstown, Ill./Heartland College) led off the seventh with a single, but freshman Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) popped up a bunt for a double play to stop the momentum as Foley's strikeout ended the game.

Foley picked up the win, allowing two runs on five hits in seven innings. She walked three and struck out 11. Harbison (4-7), surrendered three runs on five hits in six innings. The right-hander walked four and struck out seven. Freshman Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) tossed a scoreless inning in relief.

The Lady Hawks fell behind early in Game 1 as the first four batters reached for the Greyhounds on a walk and three singles to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. QU starter Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.) escaped the two-on, none-out jam by getting three groundouts to the drawn-in infield.

Quincy stranded three runners through the first two innings before Scrum crushed a two-run, line drive homer to center to tie the game at 2-2 in the third.

The Lady Hawks took a 3-2 lead in the fourth as senior Jessica Grimes (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu) doubled and scored as classmate Jill Suellentrop (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) grounded a ball through the legs of the UIndy second baseman that rolled all the way to the wall. After a single put two runners on, Indianapolis turned back to Foley in the circle. She retired the next two to keep the score 3-2.

Armstrong, who allowed just one hit in the second, third and fourth innings, ran into trouble in the fifth as Goodwin singled, went to second on a bunt and scored on Casey Williamson's RBI single that tied the game.

In the sixth, UIndy's No. 9 hitter Kelly delivered an RBI single that scored Jessie Noone, who reached on a fielder's choice. Williamson's RBI double gave the Greyhounds an insurance run in the seventh as the Lady Hawks could not get anything going against Foley.

Foley (28-4) earned her second win of the day with 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. She struck out three and allowed three hits. Armstrong (7-12) allowed five runs on nine hits with three walks and a strikeout in a complete game.

Scrum was 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI to lead Quincy's offense. Viken and Grimes also reached twice, each scoring a run.

The Lady Hawks return to action on Sunday (April 26) at noon when they take on Saint Joseph's. Quincy will celebrate its eight-member senior class in a pregame ceremony.
