Jacob and Wisdom Homers Help Hawks to Friday Sweep

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Quincy University baseball team played a late doubleheader in St. Louis, Mo. Friday (Apr. 24) starting at 5:30 p.m. at Maryville University due to the threat of inclement weather this weekend.  QU entered the weekend tied for first in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division and third in the initial Midwest Region Ranking.  The Hawks have since won two non-conference games Tuesday and took two games from MU on Friday with a 5-3 game one win and a 6-4 game two victory.  Kory Wisdom lifted the Hawks in game one with a two-run homerun in the ninth inning to give QU the lead.  David Jacob hammered a two-run homer in game two as part of his three RBI to give the Hawks a Friday night sweep.

Three straight singles for the Hawks (29-14, 21-9 GLVC) led to a two-run first inning in game one.  David Jacob singled to score Brynn Martinez and Kory Wisdom scored in the next at bat during a double play.

The Saints (17-27, 9-21 GLVC) tied the game at 2-2 with a double and a single in the third inning.

JP Meyer was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning with the bases loaded to give the Hawks the lead.

Maryville tied the game in the eighth inning on a single to left field.

Brynn Martinez reached on an error by the second baseman and stole second to set up Kory Wisdom with a chance to knock in the go-ahead run.  Wisdom did more than that drilling a two-run blast over the right field wall to take a 5-3 lead.

Mark Niebrugge threw seven innings allowing two earned runs on three hits and four walks.  Jake Wehde (W, 6-2) allowed an unearned run in the eighth, but earned his sixth win of the season.  Teddy Rule (S, 8) shut the door in the ninth allowing one hit and striking out one.

Kory Wisdom started the Hawks off in game two with a single to score Brynn Martinez in the first inning.  Wisdom recorded his 22nd and 23rd multi-hit games and is now batting .471 with two hits in each game Friday.

Maryville answered with an unearned run on a sacrifice fly in the first inning to tie the game.

David Jacob knocked a two-run homerun out to right field in the third inning to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.  It was Jacob's sixth homer of the season and first since Mar. 29 against Rockhurst.  Jacob singled home another RBI later in the game to finish the doubleheader 5-for-9 with four RBI.  Jacob leads the Hawks with 45 RBI and is hitting .400 this season.

Tommy Hager singled in the fourth inning to score JP Meyer after a lead-off double.  Ryan Snyder added a sacrifice fly after Jacob's RBI single in the sixth inning to give QU a 6-1 cushion.

Graham Spraker (W, 4-1) won his fourth game of the season.  The sophomore right-hander tossed six innings allowing four runs, one earned, on three hits and four walks.  The Saints scored three runs in the sixth, but a double play and ground out to first base got Spraker out of a bases loaded jam with the lead intact.

Brandon Ley (S, 1) allowed one hit and struck out one in a scoreless seventh inning to earn his first save of the season.

The Hawks and Saints are scheduled to play another doubleheader tomorrow (Apr. 25) barring inclement weather.  Game one in St. Louis, Mo. is set to start at noon.
