#15 Southern Indiana Keeps QU Bats Quiet

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team struggled offensively and dropped a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference games to No. 15 Southern Indiana, 7-1 and 8-0, on Saturday (April 18) afternoon in Evansville, Ind.

The Screaming Eagles (33-5, 20-4 GLVC), who are fifth in the Midwest Region rankings, got starting pitching outings from Brooke Harmening and Sarah Owens.

In Game 1, Southern Indiana opened the scoring in the first inning as MacKenzi Dorsam walked, stole second and scored on Toni Braun's RBI single off QU starter Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.). Harbison escaped further damage by stranding two runners.

Sophomore Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) put the Lady Hawks (18-24, 7-17 GLVC) on the board with a leadoff homer in the second inning. It was her third home run of the season, all coming in the last seven games.

The Screaming Eagles regained the lead in the second on Dorsam's two-run homer.

Quincy had just two hits through the fifth inning, but still trailed just 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth. That is when the Screaming Eagles broke it open with four runs on just two hits and an error to take a 7-1 lead.

Senior Kelsey Ley (Q uincy, Ill./QND) and junior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./UT-Martin) had consecutive two-out singles in the sixth, but Harmening recorded a strikeout to end the threat.

In the seventh, senior Jill Suellentrop (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) and freshman Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) both singled with two down, but a groundout ended the game.

Quincy banged out six hits in the game, but Greene's was the only one that went for extra bases.

Harmening (19-1) earned the win, allowing one run and striking out five with no walks. Harbison (4-6) took the loss, surrendering five runs on eight hits in four-plus innings. Freshman Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) tossed 1 1/3 perfect innings of relief.

In Game 2, USI scored four runs on seven hits in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead off senior starter Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.). The big hit was Dorsam's three-run home run. She would homer for the third time on the day in the fourth inning to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead. USI tacked on three more for the final 8-0 margin.

Senior Emma Topps (Downers Grove, Ill./South) singled in the second and Scrum doubled in the sixth, but those were the only two hits for Quincy in the game.

Owens (11-3) picked up the win, striking out five and walking one in a complete game. Armstrong (7-11) suffered the loss, working 1 2/3 innings.

The Lady Hawks will return to the Mart Heinen Softball Complex next Saturday (April 25) to open the final weekend of the regular season against No. 10 Indianapolis. First pitch is set for noon.
