Hawks Sweep Drury Saturday

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team started their weekend Great Lakes Valley Conference series with Drury University by sweeping Saturday's doubleheader.  QU won game one 6-3 thanks in part to five runs in the first two innings.  In game two, the Hawks shutdown the DU offense for a 3-1 win.  The Hawk totaled 18 hits while holding the Panthers to 10 hits in the two-game sweep.

The Hawks (24-13, 18-8 GLVC) seemed doomed from the first pitch when Dallas Williams sent Mark Niebrugge's (W, 6-1) fastball over the left field wall to give Drury (17-19-1, 12-12-1 GLVC) a 1-0 lead.  Niebrugge and the Hawks had other plans as the sophomore starter settled in to record three outs in the next three hitters.

The QU offense answered by roughing up Trevor Richards (L, 2-3) in the first two innings.  Brynn Martinez singled up the middle to start the bottom of the first.  Kory Wisdom singled to left field advancing Martinez to second and David Jacob singled through the right side to score Martinez and put runners on the corners.  Ryan Snyder followed with a single to right field to score Wisdom and advance Jacob to third.  JP Meyer grounded out to shortstop to record an RBI with Jacob scoring on the play to total three runs in the first.

Justin Blechle tripled in the second inning and scored on a Brynn Martinez single.  Kory Wisdom singled to advance Martinez to third.  A ball squirted away from the Drury catcher and the speedy Martinez raced home to slide in safely out of the reach of the diving Panthers catcher.  QU led the Panthers 5-1 after the second inning.

Dallas Williams came up again in the third inning and blasted another solo shot to left field for his second homer of the game.

The Panthers added another run in the fifth inning to pull within 5-3.  Richards held the Hawks scoreless for three innings.

With two outs in the sixth inning, Justin Blechle doubled to left center to spark a two-out rally.  Gordon Gundaker singled to center to score Blechle to add an insurance run.

Mark Niebrugge threw eight innings allowing three earned runs on six hits and one walk.  Niebrugge finished with five strikeouts in his sixth win of the season.  Teddy Rule (S, 7) entered the game in the ninth allowing one walk and striking out one to earn his seventh save of the season.

The first three in the Hawks' batting order (Martinez, Wisdom, and Jacob) finished with four runs scored and two RBI with six hits.  Justin Blechle was two for three with a double, a triple, and two runs scored.

Drury scored first in game two when John Goodrich singled to score Tyler Arthur in the second inning.  Graham Spraker (W, 3-1) started running into pitch count trouble early in the game as the Panthers fouled off multiple pitches per at bat.

JP Meyer tripled to left field with one out in the bottom half of the second inning and was brought home by Zach Knese with a double down the right field line to tie the game at 1-1.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, JP Meyer singled and Zach Knese followed with another single to put runners on first and second.  Justin Blechle singled to score Meyer and advance Knese to third giving QU a 2-1 lead.

Brynn Martinez walked to start the fifth inning for QU.  Kory Wisdom grounded out on a hit and run advancing Martinez to second.  David Jacob doubled to deep left center to score Martinez for a 3-1 QU lead.

Graham Spraker climbed back on the bump for the bottom of the seventh inning with over 100 pitches thrown, but he threw some of his best stuff of the day.  Spraker allowed one single, but got a pop out, fly out, and ended the game on a fastball that blew right by Dallas Williams for a swinging strikeout.  Spraker allowed one earned run on four hits and four walks with six strikeouts in seven innings.

JP Meyer was two for three with two runs scored in game two.  Zach Knese was three for three with two doubles and an RBI.

The Hawks play Drury in another doubleheader tomorrow (Apr. 19) starting at noon at QU Stadium.
