Hager Shuts Out Panthers to Win Series 3-1

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team split Sunday's doubleheader with Drury University to earn a 3-1 series win this weekend.  Tommy Hager tossed a complete game shutout in game three to lift QU to a 6-0 win.  DU took game two 7-4 by outlasting a four-run ninth inning from the Hawks.  QU is now tied for first in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division.

Tommy Hager (W, 3-0) was the story for the Hawks (25-14, 19-9 GLVC) in game one tossing seven scoreless innings allowing three hits and one walk.  Hager struck out nine Panthers (18-20-1, 13-13-1 GLVC) retiring the final 15 hitters.

Kory Wisdom blasted his first homerun of the season in the third inning with Brynn Martinez on first.  Wisdom turned on a pitch left up in the zone and promptly placed it on the newly renovated football field on the other side of the right field wall.

With a 5-0 lead, Gordon Gundaker popped off his second homer of the season deep over the left field fence and into the parking lot across Sycamore Street.  Gundaker's solo shot gave QU a 6-0 lead.

Kory Wisdom was three for three with a homerun, double, and single.  Wisdom had three runs scored and three RBI.

Ryan Snyder was two for two with a double and an RBI.

The Panthers spoiled the sweep in game two with four runs in the first two innings.  Luke Burnidge (W, 3-3) threw eight and a third innings allowing three earned runs on five hits and four walks.  Burnidge did not allow a run until the eighth inning and carried a no hitter into the fourth inning.

Jake Peterson (L, 2-4) settled down after the first two innings.  Peterson threw six innings allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits and two walks.

Drury led 7-0 headed to the bottom of the ninth inning.  Kory Wisdom singled on a sharp hit ball in the hole that was knocked down by the shortstop.  After an out moved Wisdom to second, Ryan Snyder doubled to score Wisdom.  Dominic Miles walked and Burnidge was lifted for Gage Jacobs.  Jacobs got a strikeout and then lost the strikezone walking Zach Knese and Justin Blechle.  Gordon Gundaker singled on a Texas-leaguer to center that scored two runs bring the score to 7-4 in favor of the Panthers.  Brynn Martinez popped up to end the game as the tying run at the plate.

The Hawks play host to Lincoln University on Tuesday, April 21 in a midweek non-conference doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at QU Stadium.
