Hawks Drop Regular Season Finale To Lindenwood

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team fell in four sets to MIVA rival Lindenwood, 20-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-22, in the regular season finale at Pepsi Arena on Friday (April 17) night.

The Hawks (13-14, 5-11 MIVA) will now await Saturday's MIVA matches to find out where they will play in the first round of the conference tournament. Quincy will be either the No. 7 or No. 8 seed, playing No. 1 Lewis or No. 2 Loyola Chicago. If Grand Canyon defeats IPFW on Saturday, the Lopes would slide into the No. 7 seed, but if the Mastodons win, the Hawks would be the No. 7 seed.

On Friday, the Hawks looked strong in Set 1 after falling behind Lindenwood, 14-11. Sophomore setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) scored six straight points on the serve to give Quincy an 18-15 edge. Junior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) stretched that to 22-17 and Quincy went on for the 25-20 win. Senior outside Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) had eight kills in the opening frame.

The Lions (12-11, 7-9 MIVA) hit .526 in Set 2 and never trailed as they stormed off with a 25-14 win.

The Hawks led Set 3, 16-14, but the Lions scored the next three points to take a 17-16 lead. Quincy pulled back into a tie, 20-20, on Colin Hackworth's attack error. The Lions followed with three straight points and pulled out the 25-22 win.

Quincy had a great chance to extend it to a fifth set, but after leading 17-15, the Lions scored five straight with Kyle Overby serving to take a 20-17 lead. The Hawks rallied for four straight before the officials overturned a call against Lindenwood that flipped a point back to the Lions and gave them a 21-20 lead after the teams replayed the point. Lindenwood took that momentum onto a 25-22 win.

Rogan had a career night in his final match at Pepsi Arena, putting down 15 kills (.308) – two shy of a career high – to go with five digs and two aces. Sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) had seven kills (.188) and junior opposite Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) added seven kills and a match-high 10 digs.

Lawson and senior middle John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.) had six kills each. Fanfulik just missed a double-double with 30 assists and nine digs. The Lions out-hit the Hawks, .312 to .198, though Quincy had more kills, 43-41. Lindenwood led in aces, 8-7, and blocks, 9-3.

Colin Hackworth led the Lions with 13 kills (.357) while Overby added 10 (.320). Connor Metcalfe dished out 34 assists.
