Hawks Season Ends In MIVA Tournament Quarterfinal

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team played No. 4 Loyola Chicago in the quarterfinal of the MIVA Tournament for the third consecutive year on Friday (April 24) and the Ramblers came away with a straight-set win over the Hawks, 25-17, 25-14, 25-13 to advance to the semifinals.
 
The Hawks finished the season with a 13-15 overall record and won five MIVA matches in the regular season for the first time since going 7-9 in the 2003 campaign.
 
Junior opposite Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) finished with a match-high eight kills (.211) and had two aces to lead the Hawks offensively. He now has 100 service aces in his career and is 140 kills away from the 1,000 plateau.
 
On Friday, the No. 7 seed Hawks could not get anything going against the No. 2 seed Ramblers (23-2), who will play No. 3 seed Ohio State in the MIVA semifinals. Quincy hit .063 for the match and struggled behind the service line with 19 service errors.
 
In Set 1, the teams were all square at 7-7 before Loyola went on a 4-0 run with two-time MIVA Player of the Year Thomas Jaeschke on the serve to give the Ramblers an 11-7 lead they would not relinquish.
 
The Hawks had no answers for the home team in Sets 2 and 3 as Loyola would go on to hit .377 for the match with 31 kills and eight errors on 61 attacks. Quincy had 18 more attacks than Loyola, but had 20 attacking errors.
 
Sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) finished with six kills (.417) to go with a team-high three blocks. Sophomore setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) had 23 assists and a team-high four digs. The Ramblers had a 6-4 edge in blocks and led the Hawks in kills, 31-25.
 
Jaeschke (.385) and Cody Caldwell (.429) led the Ramblers with seven kills apiece with Jaeschke adding three aces. Jeff Jendryk had six kills and Ricky Gevis added five. Peter Hutz handed out 28 assists.
