Harbison Shutout, Heart of Lineup Lead QU to Sweep

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team got a strong pitching performance in Game 1 and followed that up with an offensive outburst from the middle of the order in Game 2 to sweep visiting Lincoln, 5-0 and 12-4, in nonconference action on Wednesday (April 15) at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.

The Lady Hawks (18-20) have now won four in a row and are looking to build some momentum as they return to GLVC play on Friday (April 17) at Bellarmine with eight games remaining in the regular season. Quincy needs to get on a run to return to the conference tournament for the first time since 2013.

Sophomore Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) toed the rubber for the Lady Hawks in Game 1 on Wednesday and she fashioned her first career complete game shutout.

The right-hander allowed just four hits as the Blue Tigers (3-39) stranded seven runners in the game. Harbison allowed one walk and struck out five – the first four outs in her start came via the strikeout.

She stranded a pair of runners in the first after a double and an error left runners on the corners, but Spencer Silva went down swinging to end the inning.

Three batters into the QU lineup and the home team had a 3-0 lead in the first. Senior Alanna Viken (Mazon, Ill./Seneca) doubled and classmate Kelsey Ley (Quincy, Ill./QND) was hit by a pitch before junior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./UT-Martin) picked out an 0-1 pitch for a three-run homer to left field. She is tied with Ley for the team lead with eight home runs.

Senior Jill Suellentrop (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) led off the fourth inning with a solo homer and Viken's one-out solo blast in the sixth gave QU the 5-0 margin. Suellentrop now has three homers on the season and Viken has six. Viken has 28 home runs in her career – five shy of Erin Gregory (2008-11) on Quincy's all-time list.

Harbison (4-4), who made 133 pitches in the shutout, retired the last seven batters she faced to end the game. Madison Ragar (0-17) took the loss for Lincoln, allowing five runs on seven hits in six innings.

Viken and Scrum were both 2-for-4 in the game, while sophomore Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) was 1-for-2 with a walk.

In Game 2, the Lady Hawks got on the board in the first inning as Scrum, who singled, scored on Greene's RBI hit to give QU a 1-0 lead.

Senior starter Murphi Armstrong (Streator, Ill.) did not allow a hit in the first two innings and pitched around a pair of two-out singles in the third to keep the Tigers off the board.

Quincy tacked on three more in the third as Scrum doubled and scored on a two-run homer by senior Emma Topps (Downers Grove, Ill./South) that gave the Lady Hawks a 3-0 lead. QU tacked on an unearned run later in the inning as two errors helped Greene, who drew a walk, scored on a wild pitch.

Topps' RBI double and Greene's two-run home run in the fourth gave Quincy a 7-0 lead before the Blue Tigers responded with four runs on four hits and an error in the top of the fifth.

Quincy got all four runs back in the fifth to take an 11-4 lead. Topps drew a bases-loaded walk before Ley came in to score on a passed ball. Greene followed with a two-run single up the middle to stretch the lead to seven runs.

The game ended in the sixth as Suellentrop stroked an opposite field leadoff double into the gap and pinch-runner Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) scored on an error for the 12-4 margin.

Armstrong (7-9) picked up her seventh win of the season, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits. She struck out three and walked one. Macie Kinsey (2-11) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.

The 3-4-5 hitters (Scrum, Topps, Greene) combined to go 8-for-9 with two homers, two doubles, nine RBI, nine runs and three walks. Greene drove in five runs and Topps had four RBI.

The Lady Hawks will return to the field on Friday (April 17) at 1 p.m. CT when they take on Bellarmine in Louisville, Ky. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Sunday (April 19), but forecasted rain forced the games up a couple days.
